Many of you here followed my journey to Bonneville the last two years. For those who didn't I have been entrusted with the care of this World Famous Land Speed record holder:
DSCF2816.jpg

The owner of the car lent it to me to help me in my fight with cancer and to check off an item on my Bucket List hence the current name on the car. So now my bucket list has been checked I find myself on a new mission. In researching the history of the car I discovered that this year will mark a significant milestone in the cars history. If a way can be found to get the car to Speed Week in August, the car will have been raced for 50 years. If you know anything about Bonneville and the effects of salt you know that the mere fact the car exists is amazing. That it's still in race condition is even more amazing.

A brief overview. The car was ordered from Studebaker in the summer of 1962 by Bill Burke. It was delivered to the offices of Hot Rod Magazine where Bill worked on November 8, 1962. Nine months later in August 1963 Bill drove the car to the first of over 30 records this car has set. He went 147 MPH with a 229 CID Supercharged Studebaker V8. The car set records over the next eight years and in 1972 the car set the first record over 200 MPH at 221.812 using a a destroked 331 Hemi. The car still has three records on the books. Bonneville in C/CBFA of 239.208 set in 1979 with Steve Burke at the wheel. El Mirage in E/CBFA in 1977 at 202.383 and E/FCC at 210.770 in 1981 with Mike Cook at the wheel. Drag racing fans will recognize that name, as Mike's dad was none other than Doug "Cookie" Cook of Stone, Woods and Cook fame. Doug and Mike campaigned this car for about 12 years and set over 25 records. The car has recorded speeds of 250 MPH. That is just a condensed version of the history of this car.

So here is the deal! The car is and will be officially "For Sale" at the end of race season this year. I have the car and it is 95% race ready minus engine. It will accept any engine but a Hemi would be nice since that is what it was raced with from 1972. As fellow Mopar guys and gals I know you share my desire to see this car race with a Hemi to fulfill the legend this car is. I am looking for an individual, group or car club (a For A bodies group project?) to finance the trip to Bonneville. Do you have an engine or access to one? The ability to finance the trip? PM me and let's talk. I am open to all ideas, suggestions or questions. Would you like to share driving duties? That's available too. I'm not greedy just looking to complete this quest. Looking forward to hearing from you.

Bill Burke and his Studebaker has been in a few right up's in the past and let me congratulate you on your mission... You can make it happen :glasses7: smooth as glass and getting the hp to the gears and drive that great Mopar(jmo on the mopar thing) going strait and safe :burnout: Wow I am looking forward to this thread being updated :happy1: again, Congratulations Dan :glasses7:

If only I had the means, I'd be all over that offer.
Good luck with achieving your goal, Dan! I'll be watching this thread with great interest.
The Avanti body style has always been one of my favorites. One of my cousins owned an Avanti back then.
Interesting to see the car was originally delivered to the Hot Rod offices on my birthday - now I know why I didn't get what I wanted that year! LOL

Back in 83,(high school kid)somone offered me a 2 dr post 53/54 Studie ROLLERFOR FREE!I think the Gopden hawk, maybe(The swoopy one).Had a place to work on it,shop teachers would help with parts.Alas, dad said no,gotta worry bout college.I still shake my head at what could of been.

OK, here's the deal. The softest records (easiest to set a new one) are in the "E" engine classes. So since we all know that the best breathing engine in the world is a Hemi and they respond well to both boosting and fuel let me suggest a plan. Does someone out there have an early Hemi that cleaned up would be under 260 cubic inches? With a nice cam and a blower the Avanti could be used to set two new records. One on gas (racing gas) and the other on fuel. The Avanti currently holds records in "E" Altered and Competition Coupe at El Mirage. The gas record is only 2 miles per hour off the Bonneville current record and the fuel is 2 miles per hour faster than Bonneville. So a Chrysler, Dodge or Desoto Hemi just might be the ticket. So anyone with one want to go set some reocrds and get their name in the record books. If either of these records were to be broken the driver would not only get the record but would also join the very special group of people in the 200 mile per hour club. So who wants in?

Well Dan, I can't throw a Hemi at you because I don't have one. But I can start the ball rolling a bit by offering to doll it up for your run!!

I've also got a $75 PSC Gift Certificate to auction off with all proceeds going toward your record-setting attempt if that's all right with you.

Anybody want to start off the bidding??? C'mon FABO, this could be something really cool that a lot of people could get involved in.

Cuda Chick,

I like your offer. :blob:
I am sure the headers will need to be coated to prevent salt destruction. Of course anything else that will come in contact with the salt will need to be coated.

I like the idea of raffling off your certificate so I'm on board and let the bidding begin. So far I have had a few people talk to me but nothing firm or promising yet. First race is in May so there is still time to make that race for tuning ect.

Still hoping to drop a Hemi in the car with a 6.71 blower to make it look like it did in the past when it set all the records. We shall see.

Thank you Mopar lovers for all the support. Your awesome!
Dan
