I have just acquired a '51 331 hemi and I have already a 904 auto trans in stock. Would the 331 bolt up to the 904 trans? Is there an adapter plate for this? Or do I need to use a different trans?

Early hemi engines usually have the bellhousing built onto the back of the block. Only $1,000 bux for that one.

Nothing is a direct bolt on other than a cast iron TF. Adapters are made, looks like they don't do 904, just 727 and 518.

No. The 51-53 early Hemis have an extended bellhousing flange on the block and the only thing that's a direct fit is "whatever" transmission came behind it. There was a kit available that enabled you to cut the bellhousing flange to the 54-59 bellhousing length, but Lordy, good luck finding one!

First off, is it an extended block or not? Makes a huge difference.

If it's not an extended block, try WilCap (https://wilcap.com/index.htmlor) or HotHeads (https://hothemiheads.com/transmission_adapters/index.html) for adapter kits. The adapters are for 727s, but they work with 10" convertors, so you may get them to work with the 904.
If it's an extended block, good luck. Sorry.

‘51-‘53 331’s are all extended blocks

I am in the process of making billet 5/8 thick aluminum adapters with the pieces that bolts to the crank/flexplate that centers the snout on the convertor. You will see them on here when I get them done. The first one goes to my friend Mel.
