516 head question

-
The story on the heads is the local shop said he wants to do guides, seats, valves, the whole shebang 1500
He mentioned sbi and si and I wanted something a bit sturdier as I will be driving this like a maniac. Maybe not much racing but bagging and impressing are more my style. I hope the ferrea's will hold up. I did have a 289 that a guy here did with ferrea's and he showed me the stock valve open a bit and I couldnt see nothing. he did the same with the ferrea and I could see right out to daylight. He knew his stuff. Unfortunately he retired. I may try to track him down as he was a fanatic I couldn't imagine him not having a personal shop at home still.

I am building a 66 383 and have the 2315 forged flat tops. the shop said I would be good with those to at least .500 so I went with the comp XE274H-10
274 int./286 exh.
0.488 int./0.491 exh.
I hope thats gonna clear it with the 1.74

Sorry to highjack qkcuda but you all seemed so knowledgeable here I figured it was my best shot.

Sorry, I got really slammed today, I do have a head casting and valve ready to measure tomorrow morning.

well I got the tool steel retainers today. I might as well get the springs and locks coming before they jack up the prices for Christmas

any update?

thanks
On this one particular head with this set of keeper's, retainer and valve.
I'm coming up with 1.840 maximum installed height.
You'll probably have to get a set of + .050 keeper's to raise the retainer & get 1.890
.010 of more pressure won't kill your cam.

I can’t imagine that package of parts having less than 1.900” IH.
You’ll likely end up needing to shim to get there.

Unmolested 452 head, Ferrea f5055 valve, comp 612 locks, comp 741 retainer, and also a comp 1730 tool steel retainer(the TS retainers have more installed height).
A-741 retainer(1.928”)
B-1730 retainer(1.978”)

**I have seen where there can be slight variances in IH for different batches of the same part number of retainers and locks.

Yeah, there is probably something wrong on my part. Coming up with the numbers this head is giving me.

C- Ferrera f5055 valve, OE retainer, stamped 7* locks(1.889”)
D- stock replacement 4 groove valve, OE retainer, OE 4 groove locks(1.885”)

that was the 516? thank you for checking it. From what I seen milling down is a no go so yes I better look closer

thank you for taking the time to do that. other than the chamber, are the 452 and 516 valve location and geometry the same?
the 1730 retainer and the 1732 I got the 1732 it recommended with the 911 springs. I hope I got the right ones because I grabbed them off amazon then right after they jacked them up $100CAD.
So if shimming is all I need thats a win.

Happy thanksgiving to all down south and God Bless!

Yeah that was a 516. It would be a good idea to buy an install height mic. If you have calipers you can install a valve with a retainer and keeper's together. Just pull up so the valve is seated and measure from the spring seat to the bottom of the retainer, that will get you really close.
It's very easy to do and you can set up your own heads
If you need to take a spring to a shop and have it measured, I guarantee they won't charge much.

true thats a handy tool. I am getting a shop to build the heads. I just wanted to gather up as much as I could and use something more severe duty wise than sbi replacement suff. I hope I'm making the right choice because its been a merry go round to get this done. I dont know how I pulled it off back 35 years ago in a hay barn

Yeah I get it however the hydraulic flat tappet isn't going to withstand much more spring pressure than recommended without edm lifters or a perfect break in. I run edm lifters on a solid flat tappet, have a 2.19 intake valve so I run a bit more spring pressure on my intake.

what about rhodes anti pump up lifters? My buddy had a 350 with those and it would really wake up like an animal
they got a super lube lifter
I hope the comp ones I got just work.

I have those in my 5.9 magnum I'm not sure i can tell a difference but I have a bigger cam in it too.
I think what ends up happening is it end up being like a variable lift & duration lifter, that might work too but I'm not really familiar with them.
I just like the oil feed hole in the lifter like edm has but they cost quite a bit more.

Rhodes lifters are variable duration lifter that have a high bleed down rate that gets less at higher rpm’s. I have used quite a few sets. Thh bb eir great at what they do. Kim

back then there were none of these wories. He had shot peaned and sculpted rods that looked like mirrors. 2.02 heads, blue racer rollers and guides that whole 9. It made power to about 7600.

so I guess on here my next worry is stock type lrockers. are they gonna hit the retainers?

Christmas wish list:

Rockers will most likely be fine. That's an easy bolt on to check

the 1730 retainer and the 1732 I got the 1732 it recommended with the 911 springs.

Fundamentally the 516 & 452 are the same as far as parts usage goes.

The IH between a 1730 & 1732 should be the same.
I used a 1730 because that’s what I had on the shelf.
