6 Speed

Has anybody installed a Tremec 6 Speed in an A body Dart?

In a '68 Barracuda... it doesn't just bolt in.

I wasn't sure the 5 speed could survive behind my engine and the six speed shifts better. I have not driven it yet... so no feedback there.

Cool.... so I was wondering if the shifter ended up in a position close to stock? Where you able to use your console without cutting it?

I relocated the console mounts an inch or so back, that is all.

The 6 speed is a double overdrive isn't it? You would have to purposely build the engine for 1000 rpm at 75 mph in 6th. Lol

Wow that's a nice looking engine...what are the specs on that?

440 +0.030 with Ross pistons, 0.990" pins. Ultradyne solid lifter cam with 243 duration @ 0.050, 108 LSA, 0.548" lift with a 1.5 rocker. Oil pump pickup enlarged to 1/2" and a few other oiling mods. Engine machine work was done my Muscle Motors in 2001. With ported iron heads, 10.1:1 compression, an Eddy dual plane and an 840cfm BG carb it ran 90mph in the 1/8th mile in Denton with air temperatures at about 102 that day.

When I took apart the car to paint it I called MM back up and asked them to build me some Edelbrock RPM heads. They did some mild porting which brought the flow to 306 @ 0.6". Mike tells me with the head swap alone I could pick up almost a 100hp. They flow about 25% more than the iron heads flowed. These are the 75cc version of the heads; with my pistons at zero deck, the FelPro blue gasket, and the as finished chamber size the compression comes in at 11.3:1.

The intake is Mopar part number P3690982. It is an intake designed by Weiand and Mopar for super stock racing. The runner length is tuned for a stock stroke 440. Some believe it is the best cast manifold ever made for the 440. The intake I found new, never used or modified and sent to F&B performance. They did some clean up and gasket matching on the intake, then did their port injected EFI six pack conversion. The throttle bodies are good for up to 1900cfm? Basically, not much restriction, just an air valve. A lot larger throttle bore than the stock six pack carbs. This intake is well known for its fuel puddling issues in the upper plenum, low speed fuel mixtures issues and other rude behavior for a street car; it is also known for the straight line power. I imagine the port EFI pretty much eliminates all the bad things... no fuel in the upper plenum to go the wrong way!

I have a Aeromotive A-1000 in tank pump and a XFI 2.0 EFI controller that has an input for a flex fuel sensor to automatically adjust the fuel ratio based on the % of alcohol and built in traction control. I am setting up the fuel system to be able to run E-85 or a mix of that and 93. There are three gas stations in my immediate area with E-85 at the pump.

With my "little" street cam and my EFI intake it could be close to 600hp. With the iron heads this was a solid 11 second car. I am changing from an automatic to a stick, adding EFI and a few other changes. I just want a little better performance and a car that is more pleasant to drive. Better heads, a little more compression, EFI, and a six speed manual transmission. Should be interesting.

2500 rpm at 85mph... we have some roads here in Texas with 85mph speed limits. This ain't Oregon. I'm still debating if I run 3.54 gearing 3.73, or 3.90.

The console is an 1 1/4" back from the stock location. I turned the shifter around from the rear location to the front just to keep it closer to the stock location.
I didn't like the Tremec shifter at all too long a throw and very hard to shift 2nd to 3rd gear so I swapped it out for a PRO 5.0 shifter ( I know is a Mustang part but it works) it works much better the only thing is it's about an 1 1/2" taller than stock and if I had known that I would of raised the console a little as well.
Somewhere in the lost forum world under the manual transmission section I did a write up and there are lots of pictures of what I did to make it work.
The car is a 67 Barracuda with a 446 Stage 5 Hemi conversion engine and 3:91 gears.
The car had run 11.29@130 Mph with the automatic in it and a set of drag radials, now with the 5 speed 1st and 2nd are a waste of time with that much gear. If someone wants to get frisky I just leave in 3rd gear
But before the swap I could only drive about 85 miles on a tank of gas and now I get a little over 200 miles on a tank but the best part is the engine runs a lot cooler without the big tranny cooler in front of the radiator.
I'm going to swap out the 3:91s for a set of 3:55s to make better use of 1st and 2nd gear plus improve the gas mileage some more

for lower torque apps, the AX15 is a good alternative, IMO. If I was 25 years younger, I would build a combo around that trans; it comes with excellent ratios. It's just a lot short of torque rating; 300,IIRC.

Did you convert this from automatic?
No, 3 in the tree manual in the car originally. It is a TKO 600 behind a 408. Didn't need the extra torque capacity of 6 speed.
With 3 speed, no issues with previous shifter location or consoles. All and more of original trans hump had to come out and then rebuilt with new trans supports. Gets a little tight underneath with TTI headers and such. Had to go with mini starter which I am not happy with on hot starts. Didn't buy one of the aftermarket installation kits so had a few trips to machine shop and a few other component returns to get everything working right.

Not an early A but I have a viper t56 in my duster like 8 years now. With 3.73 and 25.5” tires it’s pretty good, I’d like a little more gear to make 6th a little more useable but I’m not cruising at 85.
Chop the tunnel and crossmember. Build a new upper hoop for the crossmember and just make a tunnel to fit after it’s all done. The trans is BIG

I got the quote from Silversport...$6000. OUCH !!!! Includes everthing even the pedal setup for the DART.. Gonna have to think about that for a while..

Yeah I didn’t do a kit. I pieced together my setup and honestly the only reason I went with the t56, it was the best bang for the buck for overdrive behind a bb. I got a quote for one of those gm auto kits from silver sport I want to say it was 8,000. I’ve put together a few cars for that kind of cash and have had a lot of fun with them I couldn’t see spending that just on a trans.
