Hi folks,
I want to upgrade from 13x4.5 to 14x5.5 sbp wheels for my 63 Valiant. Just bought 4 new matching 14x5.5 wheels. Due to insurance and technical surveillance regulations here in Germany I have to prove that the 14'' wheels were stock equipment or additional dealer available accesories to mount them street legal. My 63 service manual does not list 14'' for the valiant. Do you know in which year the 14'' wheel became valiant stock equipment? Or do you know if 14x5.5 could have been had as an dealer option/accessory in 63 or 64? Best would be a (digital) page copy of an old parts catalogue or a dealer ad. Anyone may help?

I saw a listing on ebay for 1967 valiant hubcaps in 14" size. I believe that would be the first year for 14" wheels. I don't have any ads or data to back it up though. I could be wrong too. There are many members here that know alot more. Be patient and I'm sure someone can help you.

Maybe look up cokertires wenskte that should tell you what sizes were available in those years.

I know they came on the cars that received a 273 Commando as an option. That would take it back to 65 for my knowledge.

Great site VDART. Painsinner I'm pretty sure the 14's were not available as a common option on early-a's until 65. But the 14's could be had through Chrysler Parts. They are listed on page 12 of my original 1964 Chrysler Parts high performance & dress up catalog. Will try to scan page & post it or PM to you.

Thanks all! I'll try seaching hamtrack. @Oldschoolcuda: a pic out of a 64 catalog would help me a lot.

dartman,
i have a 1963 val. service factory manual,sorry 2 say 14 were not available on the val.in 63.
i could copy the page and send u if like.

I got the original service manual and it denies 14'' ;(. It will be allright for the technical approval if I can show that the upcoming models in 64/65/66 had the extra option to be driven with 14''. Or that this wheels could be bought as an accesory part by chrysler or a third person manufacturer in 63/64/65. I will try it with the Chrysler Parts Hi-Performance&Dress up Parts book. It has some 14'' racing wheels listed.

Here are catalog pics.

Sorry re-checked & catalog is a 1966 edition . Hopefully info. will still help & does show they were available for the 63 to 66 early-a bodies through Chrysler parts.

Correct, '65 was the first year for the 14" SBP wheels and they came in two widths.... 14 X 4 1/2" and 14 X 5 1/2".

14x5.5" rims were standard equipment on early A body cars that came with disc brakes, which I believe were not available until 65. The added depth of the 14x5.5" was needed to clear the caliper, which is not an issue with drum brakes. Maybe SSVDP will chime in with some paperwork to show, although I think the paperwork oldschool has provided should get you past the feds!! Never heard of "technical surveillance regulations", and frankly don't think I want to hear more. Sounds like a bit of gov't intervention that shouldn't be so, causing you to not be able to upgrade your rims and tires to 14", which IMO are much safer than running 13's. Good luck with your project, I hope you can clear this hurdle and get that rubber to the ground!! Geof

The 14 X 4 1/2" wheels I have fit the disc brakes also.
