I recently finished my 65 Barracuda and I absolutely love the car! My first time filling up the tank I had gas spill out while filling it up. I was quick to clean the quarter off and avoid any damage to the paint. Well, I was driving the car around a few weeks ago and after pulling into the garage I saw the disaster on my quarter. The fuel had I can only assume traveled up the filler tube while turning the car during the drive and drained fuel down my quarter. The paint has bubbled up and is soft goopy in the area.

My question is has anyone found a solution to the rather terrible filler angle of the first gen Barracudas?

Me either, I avoid filling the tank so much that fuel is in the filler neck. 65'

Filler Tube Conversions

FIX THAT QUARTER PANEL FUEL SPILLAGE !!! Here we have converted filler tubes for 1963-66 A-Body Mopars (Darts, Barracuda's, Valiants) that will eliminate that fuel spillage on the Newly painted quarter panel. Our conversions include original filler tubes that have been converted internally so that you keep that stock look, New filler tube tool, New filler tube to body gasket, Road tested for over 6+ years and counting on various A-body models and up to 70mph on Highway onramp cloverleafes.

P.S. CORES>We accept good cores only - must not be broken, ripped, torn, excessive rust (cancer), or warped to qualify as a good core and MUST be submitted with 90 Days of Invoice Date!!!!

RN-636AFTC...1963-66 A-Body....Filler Tube Conversions (with core exchange) $179

RN-AFTCORE.....Core Charge....$120

IN STOCK and ready to ship....

Check your gas cap seal and the surface on the filler neck where it seals. I've seen TONS of those filler necks that are damaged from incorrect caps being jammed into the opening.

Am assuming these are for the normal Early A cars, not the wagons since their filler tube is different?

I think their's is a surge/baffle kit that they insert into a stock neck. I would imagine they could install that same kit in a wagon neck too. Give Rick a PM.

If we had any stationwagon filler tubes on hand....it might be possible to do a few of those the next time we do a batch....but no idea when that might occur.

I`m curious of what kind of paint you used, implement enamel? :realcrazy:

Yeah... gasoline shouldn't blister paint. I spill fuel down the flank of my 67 every time I fill up, and I've never had this problem (with 3 paint jobs plus the factory paint).

That's the early A racing stripe! Mine had it before I painted it. Try a non vented cap as the tube itself is vented right behind the 3 screw mounting flange.

Couldn't you do one sent to you? What would be the turn around time? I don't know about anyone else, but, I prefer to use my own parts anyway.

To set up to do just one single filler tube is just not time effective. It'd take more time for the setting up than it would to do the actual work to it.

It might be possible to do a wagon version the next time we set up to do a batch of 2-door tubes, but I have no idea when that may occur.....

My solution was to goto the 1967 Flip Top Gas Cap...
It has a nice heavy spring on the cap, holding it "tight" onto a piece of Delrin I machined with a Rounded sealing surface !
And on the back side there is a large O ring around the factory fuel neck that seals to the Delrin adapter + 2 more Small diameter O rings that seal on the metal rounded surface of factory fill tube !!! And a thin white foam seal for the black Delrin to sit against !
I just now took it apart after being on there for a number of years so I could take these photos... I don't see any damage at all... Looks New to me ! ( No Ate Paint )
I'm not always good at explaining things... so I Hope the Pictures will tell the story better then I did !
NOTE : This does not stop the Gas Fill Problem, but the driving around with a cap that does NOT Seal Problem... On Original caps, the seals have dried up and srunk !
As for filling, I hold the nozzle handle almost upside down... and I fill SLOWLY to prevent Surge ! Once I filled my B-cuda and shut my Flip Top Cap, No fuel gets out !!! ( Except into the Carburetor and out the Exhaust Pipe )

I've had this B-cuda since the mid 70's and since I did this Mod to my Gas Fill Cap a number of years ago, I just do not have the Problems with fueling up anymore ! My 2-cents and at 77, maybe I know nothing... other then I love my `cuda !

The problem the OP is having has NOTHING to do with the tube baffle, or the vent. The tube baffle is to prevent surge / spill when filling

To prevent damage when driving THE CAP MUST SEAL. These caps ARE NOT TO BE vented. They must be SEALED. Also check that the vent tube is clear, which comes out of the filler tube and runs down through the trunk floor. That is what vents the tank during driving

Different car, same problem... My solution, which I doubt anyone wants to replicate..

My 57 Fords was behind the license plate and that low! Leave the cap off and you leave a trail of gas waiting for a cigarette butt to light the fuse ........I got a different year cap on my 65, i just had to file the tangs about 2mm. Fits tight.

My " Original" 65 B-cuda Gas Cap got a brittle seal and cracked...
I put in a needle in it to show the Crack as you don't see it otherwise... so check yours closely!!! (If you use this type)
My 2nd cap ( made by Stant I believe ) was much better with thicker/ softer gasket... My fall back cap should I remove the Flip Top Cap... ( somehow I doubt that will happen as I really like the Flip Top one )

You can get new seals for the original cap.

Yeah, I could more easily make a stamp die... and make them... just find some sheet rubber of correct thickness that would stretch over the Center Lock.
2 inch od, 3/4 id, .050 thick (maybe a little thicker)
Way better then old brittle half century plus factory originals!

Good idea cudamark !
