Is the 1965 ABody fuel tank filler tube installed after the tank is secured in place or is it pushed into the tank before installation? I am trying to picture this installation in my mind but coming up blank. I just don't remember fishing the filler tube into the quarter panel while at the same time jacking the tank straight up and in. Thank you.

This is what I did. I put the tank in with the nut on the strap just started so the tank is loose. Then I wiggled the filler neck in with a bit of silicone paste on the rubber grommet. I was still a bit of a fight but went in well.

Hope that works for you.

The top of the filler tube is screwed to the inside of the rear quarter so cannot be installed after the tank is in. As I recall, I have the tube in place, but not screwed down, then work the tank onto the tube as I'm raising it into place. Once the tank is in, you can lift up the tube and screw it down. Don't forget to lube the bushing with something (soap, WD40, etc) before trying to push the tube in.

^^This and it's partly "I guess" because of the vent line fitting. The 73/ later stuff the filler goes in from the outside. Those are vented by the EVAP system

Vasoline works well too.

What I did on my 67, not the same but similar enough was basically what Keith Mopar did. I raised the tank into about the right place, then inserted the lubed up filler tube and raised the tank making adjustments to the filler tube as I went.

Also, make it easier on yourself remove the vent tube completely.

Don't forget the floor gasket , reinforcer.

This all relates to 67 but I suspect early a were very much the same.

I put the tube loosely in place, raise the tank up while inserting the tube into the tank. It required lubricating the atmosphere liberally with curse words. Ratchet straps helped lots without scratching freshly painted tank.

see my how to on this. IIRC you unscrew the 3 screws and twist and point the filler tube opening toward the from of the car, and you slide the tank up onto the shortened bottom of the tube tht is pointing back a little while maneuvering around the spare tire well.

"..Once again, rotate the filler pipe to a position that will allow the least amount of filler pipe to be showing under the car, I got it up into the fender with the flange pointing back so there was about 3" showing under the car and to a position that was pointing down and as far forward as possible. This allowed me to just hook the greased filler pipe into the flange and wrestle the tank up into mounting position and hook the frame with the strap and fully unscrewed tensioner. If the filler pipe is not separated from the fender fill location, the fill pipe is too long under the car to fit the tank flange as the tank cant get into that position due to the spare tire well. Now you can grab the filler pipe and twist and push into mounting position and screw the 3 screws in.."
