66 Dart GT HT Whatsitgonnabe?

Hey @moparmat2000! Look what I fished out of a vat just now!

^^ This was rusty in the bottom of this pic.

There is goo, almost like rust on the clamping ring and M/C lid, almost like it isn't done yet. It doesn't look quite like rust, though, more like some caked crud. I've brushed the parts with ordinary detergent for the washing machine.

A lot of it look like the parts just came out of the press!
Is that your molasses solution?

Watchout with hardware in that stuff. For some reason it really eats the **** out of it. I left some fender bolts and clip nuts in there for a week and it ruined them.

Hey Matt, I missed your replies for some reason. Sorry.

My sense of smell is completely blocked so I can't say but my wife says it stinks. I keep it outside, though. The one fastener that was in there came out ok, actually, I kept it on the booster clamping ring just to test this. But I think it needs more time, too.

I've been kept busy fixing the A4. A front coil spring broke and that turned into a proper cursing fest. I broke the steering spindle where the upper control arms connect because the retaining bolt was seized in the hole like it was welded.

Then I forgot to remove the center bolt before taking everything apart so I ended pulling the inner CV joint apart. That meant I had to remove the drive shaft and file down the stops made in the raceway to keep it from sliding apart - they were keeping it from sliding back together.

I also had to think of a was of keeping the spindle in place when I loosened the center bolt. Came up with this.

When I was re-installing everything, I routed the brake hose on the wrong side of the shock strut so I had to take pretty much everything apart again. Then, when the disk and calipers were in place, I realized I had forgotten to put the brake shield back ...

I'm a doofus.

Anyway, now all I need is new bolts (they're the torque-and-stretch, discard when used type). I'm picking them up this afternoon and then I can tighten everything and put the thing back on the ground. Finally.

I HATE WORKING ON NEW CARS!! I guess there are times when they need attention too.

Does the use of stainless fasteners with aluminum reduce those problems?
I couldn't say, I'm not a chemist. The problem is the same on our '99 Audi but I've managed to loosen both sides with relative ease, compared to this one, so I think the problem is worse on the newer model. Maybe different coating on the hardware, maybe different composition of the casting.

The spindle is marked AlSi7Mg. I suspect that means it has a 7% silicon content. I have experience with silicon-alloyed aluminum materials from my past career and it makes aluminum very stable. Mercedes uses silicon-alloyed aluminum cylinder sleeves, i think the silicon content is upwards of 30% in those.

I don't know how this affects the chemistry between the casting and the bolts but I'm sure the Audi engineers try to make this work.

I had a similar problem when I removed the rear sway bar bolt trying to get the coil spring back in place last summer. The thread stuck to the bolt so I ruined the threads backing the bolt out and had to put a thread insert in.

Today I actually saw a 66 Dart GT on the road, just outside Lidköping. Too slow to whip up the camera again.

I did come across these two, though. German plates. Flathead, at least the rod.

I threw an LCA in there just for giggles.
Well take a look at this! I took the one LCA out after two weeks and it was looking promising so I crammed the other one in there, too.

Now look at the results today, two more weeks down the line:

I'm pretty sure this was a bad idea.

What's this, @ScampMike? A filter?

IMG_8509.JPG

And what's up with the dual solenoids? One for purge:ing?

IMG_8510.JPG

I suppose the nozzles with LED:s on them are for cool purge effects, huh?

That one is not a filter it is a fuel pressure regulator, basically the system I want for mine!

I have to admit - I was a little surprised when you said you wanted it. All of that is why I took it off my car and decided not to re-install it - I never used it and had no interest in dealing with it. If you can figure it all out and do want to use it, you'll definitely be bucks ahead - all you should need is a bottle, a switch and a few plumbing pieces parts... I think.

I need to try it. What could possibly go wrong, eh?

And there was a switch!

When I saw it, I thought what a mess! Seems like it needs to be simplified.
I just think the wiring needs to be cleaned up. It'll be fun! But I'm not sure NOS is safe in my hands ...

The package got seriously beat up in transit somewhere, though. Nothing damaged as far as I can tell.

They tried bagging it up to keep stuff from falling out but failed ... Nothing missing, though.

Does anyone know where to get a kit like this one? I need the 'copper' bolt. It wears out on the old starters as you prolly know.
