Hi folks I had my 9" front drums turned a couple days ago and I'm replacing the inner and outer wheel bearings, seals and shoes and I was wondering if anyone had a torque spec/procedure handy.

I usually go with the "Tight Enough" method, but I try to use specs whenever I can.

Thanks

Hi Folks!

I noticed when checking this post it suggested similar posts and this one in particular that has links to service manuals.

I tried searching several times before posting, but didn't see the post.

Sorry for the duplicate and I will work on my search-fu :)

Thanks,
Gtaw

i tighten the nut as tight as i can by hand then about a 1/4 turn more. just make sure you cant feel any slop in the bearings. the drum shouldn't rock back and forth at all.

It's not about proper torque it's more proper procedure. For years I tighten the nut while spinning the drum (or wheel) until it is snug, back it off a half a turn and do it again. Basically you are seating the bearings and the races. If you do it 2 or three times it's ok. Then tighten the nut again till it is barely snug. I grab the drum and pull out and push in and feel for play. If you feel play or a slight clunk I tighten the nut a flat and check again. If the play is gone put the cotter key retainer on and install the key. Most retainers have 12 positions so if you need to tighten the nut 1/12th of a turn to get the cotter key in it's ok. The bearings will loosen as the grease breaks down so a tiny preload is ok. You just don't want them too tight or too loose. tmm

I am familiar with the procedure of tightening them, but I just wanted some idea of where they should be. The last drum brakes I worked on were quite a bit larger than these so I didn't want to go all He-Man on them.

Thanks again :)
