72 Duster build - Pro touring slant six

-
Thanks everyone!

It's been fun to get to it back on the road and use as a slow in town cruiser. The plan for a while is to keep the slant in it since it is running smooth and button up the rest of the car. One day when funds allow I'll probably get a another motor but that will be a few years away. I do like the idea of the slant with a supercharger or turbo though so that might happen. But for now I'm going to focus on the exhaust, paint, and remaining suspension parts.

The spoiler is a $25 69 camaro from ebay. It fits surprisingly well for not being designed for it. Just needed to drill a couple holes in the bumper brackets and it fit great.

One project I got done recently was got the hood scoop painted. Just need to mark and drill all the mounting holes.

This build is like looking into my brain and seeing my ideas come to life! Lol. From the Challenger console, to the T/A stripes and side exhaust. I’d even done a rough photochop a few years ago to see how it’d look.

I definitely vote for the T/A stripes, I would however, also do the blackout on the hood, cowl and tops of the doors and fender to complete the look.

Beautiful car! I look forward to seeing more of it!

I like the look of that pic. Do you know of anyone making that stripe? I have seen the AAR stripe so I might give that one a shot.

While the wheels were on order, I decided that I like being broke and replacing perfectly good parts so I bought a set of Viper calipers for the front. The car stopped fine but now should be on another level.

I to also know that feeling, feels good man.

I also knew I wanted a console with cupholders. The stock console aside from being expensive doesn’t really have the look I wanted. So I looked at newer cars and got a 2017 Challenger console and threw it in there. Fit almost perfect so I welded in some mounts and in it went. The only issue with it was the front of it housed the heater controls which I wasn’t using. So I filled in the area with ABS plastic and then mounted a clock, a/f gauge, and a trans temp gauge from Speedhut. These gauges are thin so they fit inside perfectly. I added in a Hurst shifter and made a cover so it looks right at home. Still need to pull the column and replace the collars so I can get rid of the column shift look.

Could you do me a huge favor and measure from the edge of the ash tray to the front of the shifter opening and to the rear of the shifter opening? I’d like to install a Challenger console but would like to see if my shifter will clear, before I buy a console, or if I’ll have to custom make a shifter. Thanks.

Awesome build! Your car turned out great. I will be picking your brain for your latest wheel and tire info. What size tires are you running and what is the wheel backspacing? My build is heading in a very similar direction as yours

I'll try and measure it up tonight. It took quite a bit of trimming to get the hurst shifter in there but it did fit...Just barely.

Thanks! Tires are 275/35/18 all the way around and the backspace is 6.25" front and 5.25 rear. The fronts might be a little different as the brake kit pushes the track width out another 3/16" and I had to roll the fender lips and do some minor trimming at the corners. The rears took some trimming too, about 1/2" off the lips and I kinda wish I added another 1/8" of backspace as they stick out just a tad further than I thought they would. But I'm still very happy with the fitment.

Thank you, that helps me out a lot! It looks like you didn't have to mini tub your car to fit those either. I've been going back and forth about doing the mini tub and if those fit your car without it, I believe I will try them on mine before I cut up the wheel wells.

Sounds good! I’m running a 5 speed so the size of the shifter won’t be a problem so much as shifter location

Alright from the ash tray to farthest point of the shifter opening is a little over 9" and 7" to the shorter section. Where mine is placed the shifter starts about 3/4" from the ash tray. The measurements of the opening all by itself is 8 1/4" on the driver side, 6.25" on the passenger side and 5 1/4" across. The console could also be moved forward or back an inch and still be comfortable. I would think with a manual it will fit easily as long as it gets centered in the console. Could even use the stock boot for it for a clean look.

Let me know if that works or if you need any other measurements.

No problem. Yeah the only thing modified was cutting and rolling the lips. Leaf springs are still in the stock location but I do kinda wish I tubbed it. 315's would have looked so cool back there..maybe someday.

I’ll be able to use those measurements for sure! Thanks so much!

Been moving real slow on this but progress has happened with a few setbacks.

Always had a decent sized transmission leak and always thought it was the pan gasket but turned out there was a crack in the case! Thought about just replacing the case but figured it would be better just to get a new transmission. Luckily Cope Racing had a slant six case in stock and the order was placed. Took about a month to get but the swap went smoothly. Only issue I had was I couldn't get the torque convertor all the way seated because the tabs had shifted in shipping. Once that was fixed the old one came out and the new one dropped right in.

While I was waiting on the new transmission I decided to work on the paint and match on the lower quarters. Got the correct Amber sherwood green paint mixed up and pushed it in the garage. Came out pretty good and am happy with the results for a driver.
