72 Duster build - Pro touring slant six

And the current project is a new TTI exhaust. I got started on it the other day and welded in an 02 bung but ran out of time getting the rest of it in. So hopefully sometime this week I can button it up.

Really wished I painted the exhaust manifold when I had it off. Looks like crap next to the new exhaust. It'll happen eventually.

Also installed the hood scoop and hood pins. Just need to cut out the holes for the air to flow through but I'm planning to make an aluminum plate to clean up the look under the hood.

Been a while since I last updated the thread so since the last post I got the exhaust all buttoned up and decided to swap out the steering box for a borgeson unit. Install was pretty smooth but I did have to shim it a bit to line up cleaner with the steering column. Has a much nicer feel now rather than the over assisted stock box.

Also while the column was out, I gave it a freshening up with some a coat of paint and swapped out the collar for a floor shift unit. Now aside from adding a heater box the interior should be almost finished.

Another item that was bugging me was the electric fan up front was louder than the motor! So I added back a standard fan and used made a temporary shroud. Cools great and if it does get hot I have the electric fan as a backup that will turn on at 210 degrees.

Also got around to cutting the holes in the hood for the scoop. Didn't want to just cut a huge hole so decided to cut three 3.5" holes and make an aluminum plate with some dimple die holes to clean it up. I'm happy with how it turned out. Now just need to repaint the underside of the hood.

Here's a couple shots from the weekend. I'm wanting to get the front end down another half inch or so but I'm sure that will cause some rubbing issues. But it's cruising nicely and has been a fun around the town cruiser. But definitely needs a little more power.

Also trying to decide on a stripe. Originally wanted to do a custom one along the T/A or AAR style but might just go with the stock stripe...But I also kinda like it without it. It's nice and clean without one but I think there is just too much green.

I reeaallyy like the looks of that car! I’ll throw my vote in for either the AAR stripe or the T/A stripe. I just think with those mini-lite wheels and the chin spoiler, it just really has that trans am racer vibe going.

Thanks! Yeah the stripe definitely will give it the right look. I saw a Duster recently with the AAR stripe but there was something about the curve on the quarter panel that didn't look right to me. Just didn't follow the lines correctly in my eyes? Not sure if the owner just didn't install it right but it just made me question it. If I could get one that was the exact dimensions of the stock stripe but had the line breaks of the AAR one then that might be the winner.

That car is really turning out nice. On the carburetor.....that's the same one I have on my slant. I have a lot more motor than you, BUT they are VERY adjustable. I am 100% certain you can tune it just fine for your motor. It has replaceable idle fuel bleeds in the metering block, and replaceable air bleeds in the air horn. You can tune that rascal to the Nth degree.

I think a black strobe stripe down the sail panel like the 71 Road Runners had would be cool, too.

What's your current wheel opening height? I'm right around 25.5-26" at all 4 corners.

We have very similar suspension and brake setups. (I've upgraded to 13.75" front brakes and it has a Hotchkiss front bar on it since this photo was taken) I absolutely love how well this car handles. I'm sure your is a blast with the lighter weight/6.

FWIW, I've never been a fan of stripes/graphics from models that weren't originally offered with them. I'm not purist, as seen by my car, but a TA stripe doesn't look good on a Duster because the body lines are different. Obviously not my car, just my $.02. I like it the way it is without any stripe.
I also don't like when someone paints a pre-1970 car in high impact colors (like plum crazy or sublime), but that's my own mental problem....lol.

I don't know......I'm kinda comin around to the bigger wheels on the Dusters of it's done right. They look purdy good.

Thanks! Yeah the carb has been great so far. Almost ran perfect out of the box but with a little tweaking gave it a nice throttle response. I almost went with an Edelbrock 500cfm but glad I went with the Quickfuel one.

Love your car! It's got such a clean look.

I'm right at 25" on the front. Haven't measured the rear but I like how the rear sits at the moment. There's just some times where I look at the front and think it needs to come down a tad. But other times it looks low enough. I think I'm just nuts!

The car feels great right now. It's got a smooth ride but can still take a bump without the car feeling too stiff. I do have subframe connectors to install so it should just keep getting better. But overall I'm happy with the parts I picked. I have a 69 Charger and went with all heim joints on the front end, handles fantastic but when it hits a pothole you feel it! The Duster has a bit more cushion which is nice.

I'm torn on the stripe. It did originally have a pencil line black stripe that followed the lines and kinda liked it. I just think there is too much green and the black would help break it up.

I've seen '71 Cuda looking Billboard stripes on Dusters. I did that to my Mom's '74 years ago. She painted over them because she didn't like them.

It's all about getting sizes that fit correctly. Of course that goes with any wheel/tire selection...

I also look at mine and think it needs to be lower, but I don't want to start bottoming out on things. I have 1.08 t-bars with Hotchkiss shocks. It eats up bumps better than my 2019 Ram.

Mines sitting at 23 7/8” to the front fender lip here. Backs still way to high at 26 3/4. Gonna put 2” blocks in to drop it down. Now, I have a Slammer series HDK suspension so that obviously changes things as far as clearance goes, vs factory based suspension.

Nice! That's about the height I want, just having the fender lip cover the top of the tire a bit. I don't think I could get mine under 24" though. Might have to settle for 24.5", hopefully theres enough clearance.

What size are your wheels?
