I am in the home stretch of upgrading the slant 6 to a 340 in my 67 Dart. I searched this forum, the web and youtube. I bought the correct column shift linkage but I can't seem to get in installed. I am having troubles getting the Z bar installed. Do I need to drop the crossmember and lower the transmission? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

727 trans? If so, are you sure you have the shift linkage for a 727? 904 linkage looks very similar, but the Z bar is longer, and the trans bracket (as I recall) is also different.

I actually ran the 904 linkage in my 67 after replacing the slant six/904 with a 360/727. I did get it to fit somehow, but occasionally on a full throttle in manual low, the movement of the trans would force an upshift before I wanted to shift. Finally figured out what was wrong and got the correct linkage.

I'm guessing it's a 904 Z bar and you're trying to fit it to a 727. If this is the case the 904 piece is an inch too long because the 904 is narrower than a 727. It's been awhile but i think the transmission bracket is lower on the 904 too?
You can jam the 904 pieces in and it will probably work most of the time but will bind won't be correct. You should index the z bar, cut out an inch and re-weld it. I've done a few but a long time ago.

I just pulled mine. 727 column shift.
The z bar measures approx 8.5 inches end to end
If you have the correct parts, it helps to loosen the trans bracket for this bar to get it into place. These are the parts I used when converting from /6 to 340 / 727

Thank you, I have the correct parts as I stated in my original post. It is very tight with the torsion bar and headers in there, just trying to get advice form someone who has been there and done that.

Might need to pull the driver's side header out of the way. Not much room to get your hands around it.

Yes, it’s tight for sure. But loosen anything you can. Even the frame bracket. Patience is a virtue.
