All right guys I'm kind of new to this. I have a 727 that needs rebuilt. I took my car, a 1973 dart to a transmission shop. The guy said the transmission needed rebuilt. This was back in September of last year. He said it would cost around $1000 to rebuild. I talked to him a couple of days ago and he gave me a quote of over $2000. Now I'm not sure how much it really cost to rebuild this tranny but I have found some online for cheaper than that. My car is not going to be raced. It is only for daily driving. He was talking about putting in a more expensive torque converter. I guess my questions would be, what kind of torque or stall converter should I use and is the price he quoted me is reasonable for work done in Iowa

how much do you make per hour? a competent transmission repair can do a bench rebuild in a couple of hours, 3hrs tops. to remove and replace the trans should take 4hrs. It probably costs less than $300 in parts, unless it's major broken. So do the math. If he is making twice what your making per hour, I say do the work yourself. If it turns out ok, and you like the work, you just gave yourself another skill, and possibly a side job.

pull it yourself. I paid my ex partners son a $1000 to rebuild mine, tip of $250 more than he quoted. I didn`t want to mess w/ it, had too much other stuff to do.

Should I put a 2500 stall converter or just a regular torque converter. The car has a 340 with a mild cam.

If you're not going to tackle the rebuild yourself, then RUN don't walk from this shop. At a $1000.00 to for all parts and labour I think that's a fair price, however to go back to the guy and find out now he wants a grand more. No way. Parts and labour didn't double in less than a year, and as far as a more expensive torque converter there is no such thing unless it's a custom high stall. You haven't said what you've got power wise and if it's pretty much a stock unit, a stock converter will do just fine. Stock Chrysler converters are well made. Ask him what this special converter has had done to it that makes it worth more money.
I'd check around for prices in your area and see what other shops would be charging for a complete rebuild, then make your decision.
By the way, the prices you got quoted, was this just for the transmission/converter rebuild, or did it include the re and re of the trans from your car.

Well I asked him last year what it would cost to have him remove and rebuild transmission and install. He said $1000. I asked how much I would save if I pulled tranny and installed myself. He said it would save me $300.

At the 1K price, it sounds about right. Prices can/will vary depending where you are. I spoke with a transmission shop owner I know and he said a total rebuild including re/re would run around $1200.00 excluding hard part damage(planetaries, pump) and of course any taxes, but would include all new friction plates, new steel plates were necessary, both bands, bushings, filter, converter etc. For $150.00 extra, he'd install the TF-SC shift kit. His price did not include an external transmission cooler.

You asked on one of your previous posts about a 2500 stall converter, or just the stock 340 converter. Unless you've been into the engine and are now making a lot more power than stock, go with the stock 340 converter. If you need a performance converter talk to one of the many converter builders that have been mentioned on this board. Give them all the information about what you done/installed to your engine, rear axle ratio, rear tire size and what your MAIN use of the car will be. Don't bs them about what you've done, or you'll end up with the wrong converter for sure.
There are exceptions of course, but over the years I was in the industry, most transmission shops knew little or nothing about performance converters.

I am taking the plunge and trying my own rebuild. I cant stand the thought of handing someone money that i dont really need to. Just another hat to wear. I hear alot of horror stories about shops around me not installing what they said was getting installed. I hope u find a good shop Gavins1daddy

So I did some calling around to other shops. The price range for a complete build with new torque converter is between $1000-$1300. That was with them taking it out and putting it back in. I wanted to use my local transmission shop but withe the price difference its a no brainer.
