I am fairly certain my master cylinder is shot.
no leaks anywhere in my system and my brakes are questionable at best. sometimes pumping them will get them to stop the car, other times I'm just floating down the road hoping there's nothing too close. i've bled and flushed the whole system as well just in case.
Here's my dilemma. I can't seem to find any site that lists the 74 as having all four drum brakes. I know that's what I have. My master cylinder also has the two pots the same size.
I'm comfortable rebuilding the master, but cant quite figure out the parts situation and my local parts stores are no help at all.

here are my very confusing options.
can anyone shed some light on whats going on here?

REBUILD KITS.
rockauto has nothing for a 74 available.
for a 73 they've got a Raybestos MK659 "manual brakes; 9" brakes" for 23.24cad

MASTER CYLINDERS
rockauto has these listed as option for 74
Raybestos MC36439 "manual brakes" 80.44cad
Centric 13063018 "front drum" 89.83cad

then has these listed for 73
Raybestos MC36338 Element3 "manual brakes w/ 9" brakes" 52.65cad
Centric 13063015 "9" brakes front drum brakes" 69.85cad

I was under the impression it would have been the same parts for 73 or 74 for drum brakes all around, so why the different parts and part numbers? so will that 73 rebuild kit work? will the 73 master cylinders work? thats a significant price difference and different part numbers for reasons I just dont understand!

anybody have any input on this?

just get a master cylinder for a 72 drum brake car...35 dollars at o reilleys, really any year disk or drum will do the job but if it's for power brakes it may take a lil more foot power to stop.

thats what i was thinking too.
although I am up in canada so Rockauto has to be the option for me. nobody has a master for under $100 after calling around this morning.

no need to give me attitude.
i don't have o'reillys within 100 miles of me and also requires crossing a border to get the part which really isn't an option. I am assuming that when I search for things the american stores don't even come up unless i specifically go look for them.

I wasn't giving you attitude, man. I was posting a link showing you a part number and that I found it for you, with no trouble. No attitude involved man.

And you can take that AC Delco part number to any good parts guy where you are and he can cross it to a number he can get. But I guess that's more attitude.

thanks for your help.
i went with the original part number to three different part stores and everyone was basically useless. even the guys i normally go to that all drive and wrench on older cars tried to pull it up in their system and they said just order it from the states, which is why i gotta go with rockauto.
i did find something on the NAPA canada site, but at 150 bucks I will wait a few days for it to come in the mail for less than half the price.

my main question is whether or not the 73 parts are the same as the 74....which mikebee confirmed.

but again, thanks for the acdelco part number.

OK you are on the right track here with your research.

For the Drum Drum A Bodies I like to use the Raybestos MC36338 "manual brakes" as it has the 15/16" bore for a little easier pedal.

Compared to the other 1" and 1 1/6" larger bores like the rockauto has these listed as option for
1974 Raybestos MC36439 "manual brakes"

Can order the Raybestos MC36338 "manual brakes" 15/16" bore master for Drum Drum:
DODGE > 1973 > DART > 5.6L 340cid V8 > Brake & Wheel Hub > Master Cylinder

The Raybestos MC36338 "manual brakes" 15/16" bore Drum Drum works nice on the Drum Drum B Bodies too to soften up the hard pedal, gives you more leverage and just a tad longer stroke. Works Great . . The Proof is in the Pudding.

Yes can be confusing, but have been through this.

Was perfect for a better brake feel on the Drum Drum Cars. 15/16" bore master.

wow. thank you so much for that!
Just ordered that part and will be glad to have functioning brakes again!!

for posterity's sake.
I ordered and installed The Raybestos MC36338 Brake master cylinder and everything worked out great. I bench bled it and didn't even need to bleed the system afterwards.
Brake throw is a bit more than the stock one, but it modulates just fine, just like @George Jets said in his post.

Glad that all worked out good for you.
