I have this issue and need some help please! I am sure somewhere this has been talked about before.

I have a 3.91 in a 4.89 case. It is the cone style rear end. Can it be rebuilt, or upgraded to a clutch type unit? I have seen new Auburn clutch type units, but what about setting it up wth the clutch type. I thknk I read you have to change the carrier bearings, but other than that it is a bolt in swap once it is setup.

I have also read some about cutting and shimming, but can I buy a new unit and or replace with a clutch type? If so where is the best place to purchase from? The car is not that heavy, it is a 64 Dart with a 416 stroker and 727 manual shift, 3k stall. Mostly a street car, some strip, but I am sure I will put the pedal down to the wood.

If I was to have it rebuilt where would I get the specs on how much to cut etc? Oh so many ??'s. I just want to do it once and what is best for the car and me.

Thank you
Dave

I have heard both sides if a cone type should be rebuilt or not. Both seem to make some sense. If it was mine, I'd bite the bullet and buy a new Auburn or Detroit Locker and not worry anymore.

Just phoned yesterday about the cone type "sure-grip". Most places don't like to repair these because there's no relacement parts like the clutches. Some will however, depending on how worn it is maybe able to shim the cones, (How I don't know). Not only do the cones themselves ware, but the walls as well. (bad thing) like no rotors left for your disc to work..

A place will look at mine at no cost. If can be repaired, min 250.00 Canadian starting. One other place told me 500.00 - 1000.00 (must be on drugs). :wack: What can I say...life's a gamble when buying a used rear. As stated, best buy a new unit to fit into your case and be done with it.

I'm sure you can get/buy a clutch unit for your case and just get the shop to put your 3:91s on

Just my thoughts..

The process for cutting the cone down and cleaning up the walls is realy something just about anyone who can change spark plugs can handle, a shop ill do it{remove .030 to .060} if it cleans up at .030 you wont need shims just put some old 727 direct clutch springs on the inside of the original springs, as for the walls...they dont wear that much , the wear usualy stops when the cone bottoms out and stops engaging...there are no clutches in the cone types so if a shop is tell you the clutches are hard to find they are right..... :coffee2:

IMHO, If you are just doing the street thing, try the trimming on the cone type.. it may work for awhile. If you go to the strip much at all and use any type of sticky DOT slick , get a clutch type or a Detroit Locker and be done with it. Its frustrating (and costly) to not go rounds because of unpredictable traction due to a worn out suregrip. Finially called Randy's Ring and Pinion and ordered a clutch type for one of ours, gave the cone unit to a buddy.

If you decide to go with a new unit, I'll buy your old one, if your interested.
