1965 Barracuda converting from a 904 to four speed. I should know the answer, but I'm going to ask anyway. I have an aluminum 833 bell housing, casting # 4202508-1, I got from another member some time ago for my /6 build. The opening for the front bearing retainer is 5.250" in diameter, the bearing retainer on my 833 is 4.250" in diameter. Do I have to modify anything to use the bell housing with my transmission?

You will need an adapter ring to make up the difference. You’ve got an overdrive 833 bellhousing and a standard A-body 833. You can’t change the bearing retainer for one that’s 5.125” OD on that transmission because it will have the smaller bolt pattern. The 5.125” OD retainer has a larger bolt pattern because of the larger input bearing.

Is there a source for an adapter? Does it get pressed into the bell housing or on to the retainer? The adapter ring on Brewers, has different numbers in size????

There are a few here I have used, Brewers didn't have them a few yrs ago, iirc .
You may have to combine a couple .

The Mopar community is very lucky to have (2) excellent specialists for our A833s..
Brewer Performance, both Wayne & Dan are great, and Jamie @ Passon Performance have alot of experience and parts. My only comment is that they are located in the east and I am in the west....

Just my $0.02....

This will mate your trans to the bellhousing, not sure what else you will need to use it the Barracuda, even though I did that in the 70's, better off the shelf parts now hopefully. Might be easier to just buy the correct bellhousing for you car in the long run. No real advantage to use that bellhousing.

It might be better to just get the correct bell and be done with it.

Those precision rings work fine, the retainer bolts with a suitable "washer" secures the ring(s) to the trans.
No big deal.
Experience. lol

Call Dan!
And congrats on going with a 4 speed, when I did a 4 speed behind my slant, I could not believe how much better it was!

Brewer's bearing retainer BR-728R is what you need. They were common on A230 3 speeds in '75 and later and used before that on trucks and vans so they are out there- for 307 bearing and have a 5.125" outside diameter. I have one but it's in use right now.

Another problem is the clutch linkage on an early A Body with the bellhousing you have. Plus you still have the 9.5 clutch anyway. Much simpler and probably cheaper to just sell that bell and get the right 64-66 bellhousing and linkage and be done. Never a problem to call brewers or Passon.
