last summer i bought a '74 duster, after checking it out after the buy i noticed it has a 9 1/4 rear end. Im curious if this rear end was an option or if it may have just swapped in sometime over the years.

It was never an option for a small car, only later year B bodies and trucks got the 9-1/4 rear. You'll need to shorten it ($$$) to fit it in and relocate the spring pearchs.

They are C-clip style rear ends so if an axle breaks, the whole axle will shoot out the side. They are also very prone to rust out inder the spring perches. Other than that, they are strong rears but ratios and diff availiblity are somehat limited. Not my first choice for a car that would see any strip duty.

Does it actually have the 9.25 installed? I didnt think any were even close to short enough to fit under an Abody without modification.

yeah it was already installed when i bought it, all the guys at the shop i work at said its a 9 1/4. it also has heavy duty leafs as well haha

i"ve got a factory posi unit and 3.55 ring & pinion out of a 76 ramcharger i would sell if you are going to use the 9.25.....posi is in great shape, gear is so...so... 150$

Thats a great price! If I were closer I'd pick it up from you as I've been poking around looking for one for my 74 charger with the 9.25 rear. I did come a cross a couple this past weekend but I wasnt willing to lay down in a pool of water to get at them! lol Maybe they'll still be there when it either freezes or dries up... not likely around here though

Mase... Thats cool that you found the 9.25 under the abody though, shows someone spent some serious cash to have it shortened!

yeah, its pretty interesting, heavy duty seems to be the direction its going in haha, even though it only has a 318 in it at the moment...

I agree it's a less desirable design but I've never actually seen a Mopar 9 1/4 pop a button or break an axle. Has anyone here seen one? I take it back....I did see one axle shaft break off....it was a pickup truck that someone was severly overloading and the axle bearing went bad. The guy kept driving it and when the bearing started coming apart, it overheated and locked onto the already severely grooved axle shaft and the flange broke off with the wheel still attached. The bearing spun in the housing too so he needed a whole rear end. I think that's the only 9 1/4 I've seen go bad except for ones run without oil.
