Hi all!

Yesterday I decided to convert my Duster to disc brakes in the front. I was sure I had all I needed for the job so I took the front wheel off and started taking all apart.
After taking all the drum hardware off I realized that I have 9" spindles :-(

I was sure I have 10" brakes cause I have LBP wheels. This is my first A-Body car so I had no idea that my drum brakes are not 10" by just looking at them.

So I need a new spindles... Can anybody tell me which ones apart form obvious A-Body v8 car drum brake spindles?

Will the 62-72 B-Body 10" drum spindle work for me?
Is there a way to use SBJ with some ball joint adapter?
Will lower ball joints fit?

Thanks!

To my knowledge there never was a 9 inch drum brake with 5 on 4.5 large bolt pattern. 9 inch front brake have a lining that is a good 3 inches wide and 5 on 4.0 small bolt pattern.

Xs2. The only thing I have seen done is the front hubs/drums were modified for lbp. Trouble there is they won't be much meat on the hub edges.

Whose brakes are you trying to install? If you are using OEM parts then you must have disc brake spindles. If you are using something like Scarebird, they are making kits for both the 9" and 10" brakes.

Previous owner redrilled the hubs for LBP.

I'm trying to install SSBC and just checked that the only thing that can cure my problem is a set of v8 A-Body car 10" drum spindles.

My problem is location, my Duster is one of four cars like this that I know of in my country so getting any parts is pain.
If any of You guys have spare 10" drum a body spindles (pre 73 I guess) please pm me.

The spindles can be found on all the A-bodies through 1965 through 1972. I am not sure about 1964. That would include the Dart, Valiant, Duster, Demon and Dart Sport. It would also include the Barracuda but the last year would be 1969 since in 1970 they became E-bodies. If non of those are available over there then you would need to get some shipped in or get the correct kit for your 9" spindles. Both the 9" and 10" drum brakes use the same ball joints.

So B Body 10" drum spindle will work with my lower ball joints correct?

Is the hole pattern different on A Body spindles? From the photos it seems to be different.

No they won't fit your upper control arms as they are now. The hubs are different on the B-body spindles so I don't think your kit would even match the the B-body spindles. That would be a question for SSBC.

10" A-body spindles should not be hard to locate here in the states. I have at least 6 extra sets still attached to cars but my health stops me from doing stuff like that now days so I cant get them off the cars.

So in fact A Body 10" drum spindles are all I need as I ordered my conversion with assumption that I have 10" drums. I was hoping to have more to choose from...

Thanks for the help. I kinda panicked cause I could not find A-Body spindles anywhere and really wanted to have my car on the road this summer. I need to go thru a big inspection as my car is going to be registered in my country for the first time.

It would be good to make somethig like compatibility list of parts that are interchangable between the cars, something would make things much easier.

They do, they are called Hollander Interchange manual. It covers body and most mechanical parts including the spindles you are working on. It doesn't do things like plugs, points or bearings. Ideally you need the 41st edition since that would cover the interchange though the end of the A-body line in 1975. They cover 10 years of vehicles but will include the information on an interchange where the same part was used earlier. My collection of them covers from the 1920 through 2006 and they have been well worth the investment.

www.car-parts.com is an on line way to figure out a lot of things but it will only show the parts that are in a salvage yard and it doesn't list what will fit by changing something as simple as a pulley. The real manual gives all the information that was available at the time.

Thanks again for all the help, www.car-parts.com seems like a great source of parts. If my FBAO deal won't work I'm going to try there. The day I started this thread one of the members put his 10" drum brakes and spindles from his 1970 v8 Duster for sale, now just waiting for the price and shipping quote. Shipping rates from USA to Poland for heavy stuff are insane... When I was sending my car to Europe I put lots of parts in the trunk, apparently not enough ;-)

If you just need the spindles for your car have the seller not ship the rest of the un-needed parts since they will be so heavy.

I should also have the seler to declare these as a gift and put like 10$ value :)
People from USA often dont want to do it, I guess because there is no knowledge why people from countries like mine ask for it, so here is an example: 100$ declared part, with 100$ shipping cost to me for customs officer is worth 200$ (yes they add shipping cost) and then they ask you to pay 50% tax. So total you pay 300$.
With low value (20$) and gift declaration you just pay part and shipping cost.

Try to imagine this with a car: 10000$ car, shipping 1500$, shipping in my country 500$. You must provide all documents that proove these expenses. If you have a friend bring the car over to you for free, they dont accept this, THERE MUST BE A COST, nothing is free! So customs officer adds these and gets 12000$ that is base for tax. Tax for this value car is 8000$ so in total you pay 20000$ for your Duster that needs lots of work. There are no parts in your country so you pay tripple for anything... This is soo much fun. Think how we crazy Europeans must love these cars ;-)

I wonder how many people in the States would have musclecars with situation like this and how many would try to lower the value as much as possible not to be stolen from by the government. Also there is gas for 7$ per gallon... Yup, this is soo much fun :)
