Not sure what's going on but I just got my car running and just put fresh transmission fluid in and I can't get power out of my car I push the gas and it seems like something is holding me back I have to push down on the petal pretty hard for it to move. Could it possible be the brakes someone help I just wanna cruise already. oh its a 1973 318 with a 904 tranny I'm putting in a 59 Plymouth belvedere

If the E brake was on for a long time the shoes can stick to the drums.

You have to push the pedal hard to get the pedal to move, or the car to move?

martin, if you need a good 904, I have one in a 73 Dart Sport that will be out next week.Bill

The it has no ebrake the stock one was on the old tranny. I have to push the pedal down pretty had for the car to move. Have you ever heard anything like this before I hope my tranny isn't messed up there's no grinding or anything

The fluid is good for sure the tranny sat for years could it be the filter the guy that sold it had no problems at all with it

Did you check the fluid in park or neutral? Has to be checked in neutral. If you checked it in park it could be a couple qts. low. Is the engine revving up high before the car moves like a clutch slipping? Does it do this in reverse also?

I checked it in neutral and was full. I have s automatic transmission it goes into each gear fine. I have to rev it high in all gears for the car to move that why I was thinking maybe it could be the brakes. I really appreciate the help guys

If your feeling it drop in forward and reverse solidly it does sound like a brake issue. You might try jacking it up and seeing if you can spin the wheels freely by hand. That'd tell you if a brake was hanging up

That would tell ya quick enough.

I know its been a while but still can't figure out what's going on I changed the filter filled the tranny and still not accelerating normal. I jacked up the car to check the brakes like fishy said and the front ones were good my rear tires I'm not to sure how to check those does the car have to be in neutral. On top of that I'm leaking tranny fluid from the shifter linkage on the tranny.

Is the kickdown linkage hooked up and set correctly? It will cause the exact issue you are having, if it ain't right.

I think my kickdown is hooked up right I haven't really messed with it. It looks like its slid all the way back thanks

Yes, put it in neutral while back tires are in the air and see if rear wheels spin freely.

Jack up the rear end and try spinning the rear wheels while in the air, you will no if something is holding them back, if it is dig into it.

No No No. Improperly adjusted throttle pressure linkage will not cause a car to not move at all. You could take it completely off and the car would still drive forward and backwards, it'd burn up the trans. with it removed or maladjusted but it'd take off.

OK I jacked up the rear wheels and they spun in every gear except park. They spun kinda rough but spun. I also tried pushing while in neutral and seem to move good where do I go from here

how much fluid did you put in? 11/12 qts. /does it have the correct fluid level gauge in it?( have been burned by this before)

I have like around nine quarts in it and checked it when idling could it be my converter not pumping enough
