will it withstand 500+ hp? Can you beef it up? If not what would be a good trans, preferably manual? :salut:

Sorry for the delayed response. As far as the 3 speed manual stuff, I really can't help you much there, as I have very little experience with them. I've tried to get Jamie Passon from Passon Performance over to this board to shed some light on the manual trans stuff. It doesn't look like he's made it here, yet.

Let us know what info you find, and post it here on the board. :salut:

Now, if it were my car, and it was making 500hp, I'd swap to the 833 and be done with it. Oh wait, I mean if it was my car, it would have a 727 by now!

I do not know what the torque rating is for the A230 but I believe it came out in the early 70's after the bottom fell out of the horse power wars so I would expect to be pretty light duty.

The A833 came behind everything from \6's to 426 Race Hemi's from the factory. GM even used it in pick-ups for awhile. The 440 & Hemi versions had an 18 spline input shaft all other used the standard 23 spline input shaft. The 18 spline units are refered to as the hemi 4spds and are quite rare.

The A833OD version that came in cars had an alumium case which didn't stand up to a lot of torque unless the counter shaft holes in the case were bushed with steel then it was just as stout. A833OD that came in pick-ups and vans were iron.

The A833OD in my 68 Barracuda came from an 80 D100 pick-up. You have to custom fabricate a shifter mounting bracket and shorten the drive shaft about 3 3/8" but this particular version overdrive version of the A833OD is pretty easy to find in the D100 and vans all the way up to the mid/late 80's. It cost me $75 at the local bone yard. Much cheaper than the A-body specific short tailshaft version.

well the prob is that i think I need another gear. I got a 71 duster w/ a 318 and an a-230. I am pegging out in 3rd gear and im not even going 85. I dont wanna push it and mess up the motor( its kinda tired). Maybe it's a tranny problem. I plan on building a 360 stroker and need more assurance. :pl:

I am no expert, but I am positive that a 3 speed will not be able to withstand that kind of power. A 4 speed overdrive cannot either, unless bushed like previously stated. Best bet is a regular 4 speed, but they can be kind of hard to find. I should add in decent shape and price, had people quote me over $500 for ones that need rebuilt. You could give Jaimie Passon a call at PassonPerformance, he can tell you whatever you need to know.

The A-230 is a light duty trans. Junk. There is an A-250 that is a "medium" duty trans and is tougher transmission. Bother are Three speeds. I have an A-250 at home sitting under the bench.

None of the transmissions listed except the 833OD will help with your RPM at 85mph since they all have exactly the same 1:1 drive ratio in 4th or 3rd. I would check to see what gears you have in the rear end, and what true RPM you are running at.
