An education, please, on the history and reason for the two different spline configurations for the 833? Was it the introduction of the 340 that brought about the 30 spline shaft?

I presume the 30 spline shaft is larger in diameter than the 26?

Will the 26 spline live with a 340 OK? My smogged out '73 came with small u-joints and rear end...but it had a 30 spline 833 in it.

What was the intended use for the 26 spline trans? 273s?

Thanks.

A-Bodies had the small 26 spline A-833 in 1966 and 1967 only. They also made the heavy duty 30 spline in 1967 for the A-Body 383 cars. I would guess there was not much point in having two sets of parts for basically the same thing. Probably just standardized the A-Body to the 30 spline output version. The 26 spline output would have come with the /6 or 273 in 1966 and 1967. No 318 or 340 was available those years. The 26 spline trans will live behind a 340. the only difference is the mainshaft after the gear set, a smaller 207 rear roller bearing, the tail housing, rear seal and bushing. The same output spline as a 904. I had 26 spline output A-833 transmissions in my 66 and 67 Formula S Barracudas.

A local friend of mine has a 26 spline unit behind a 408" SB street car with a radial tires for over 20 years, and has never had any issues. It is driven hard.

Thank you.

I picked up a 26-spline 833 years ago as a spare, did not realize at the time it WAS a 26, did not know back then there was such a thing. I am considering using it as a stand-in for the 833 I am currently using...as it might have some problems of its own and might be taken out. That to still be determined.

It's good to know that specification does not make it useful for only the smaller output engines of the time of its manufacture. I was not so much concerned about the 26 part...but that it may be an ID for a 'lesser' transmission that wasn't quite up to snuff.

It's good to see that some outfits (like Brewer's) still sell prop shafts for a 26-spline/7290 u-joint setup.
