ok im new here so please take it easy on me, tell me all you know about putting a front steer rack and pinion in a stock k member a body. just swap spindels, and mount rack, and what rack do you use. i think i want to try this but just need to gather more info, thanks for sharing, jim

well the one I'm doing this time i took the left to right and right to left.then went to a sweet rack for a stock car used it was 75.00 bucks then 6 hiem ends and the shifts was another 75.00 then a new steering shaft and two Ujoints 55.00 removable steering wheel coupler 20.00 after cutting the K member down with a piece of 2/4 square tubing in the front with a flat plate on the front to bolt the rack to.so for around 250.00 bucks it takes 2 and 1/4 turns lock to lock and is very easy to turn.and looks as good as any mustang rack and 100 times stronger.and lighter. thats what i did im not camra frendly or id show you pictures.....

thanks for the reply, did you replace tie rod ends with hiem joints? i have been told not to swap spindles because of bumpsteer and something called ackerman not sure what that is. how did you arrive at the final location of the rack and how high or low to place it on the crossmember. im not familiar with a sweet rack is that a brand or can you tell me what rack will work, thanks again. jim

thanks for the info i will look at it, thats what i need is information to make decisions.

jim I'm not sure how to answer your questions but i will get back to you with the answers.my friend that builds stock cars for a living helped with putting it on.I will get you sum pictures and show you.i do know that the wheels are strate and stay that way if the car is in the air or down and both wheels turn the same.and yes the tie rod ends were replaced with heim ends and sweet is a brand name used in off road or oval track racing.this car I'm building will be a street or race car.its a 76 feather duster with a big block.give me some time and i will get pictures and post them.

bob how does your car drive with the rack ,looks like in the pics that the rack is forward of the tie rods. does that have any effect ?

Here is a really good diagrams that you need to keep in mind when putting in a rack and pinion. I also have a pdf file that explains the picture a little better. If anyone wants me to send it to them, just PM me your email address and I'll get it to you.

that looks good bob. I see you took your torsion bars out that's what i what to do.but there telling me it cant be done (BS)and i think it can.do you have any kind of support behind them.thanks artie.....

i don't have anything behind them but they do have new bushings in. some guys do install a retainer behind and weld it to the frame. my thinking is and of coarse that in it's self may be a tad faulty is the tire produces friction pulling the outside of the control arm back pivoting on the braking strut rod forcing the inside of the control arm to move forward keeping everything in it's correct place.:-D

Hey Bob you got ant photos of how you got your coil overs mounted and the braces you made or used to reenforce where the coil overs are mounted?

Hey Bob how do the upper mounts attach to the upper shock mount? are they similar to a stock shock mount? is there enough clearance between the spring and frame? and what spring rate you using? and finally you got part numbers on the coilovers? i may do this on my dart thats why i ask so many Qs. thnx.

RP57,i see you used the rear mount of the factory k frame, and made the rest of a new k from there.Thats kinda what ive been thinking about doing also.Must question to everyone is,why hasnt anybody mounted a rack in the rear of the k frame, and modified a truck oil pan to clear it?or modified a car pan to clear it.I guess ive got to get my car on the lift at work, and make some measurements.I know header clearance will be an issue, but the rack is stationary,so that will help some.
