After 18 years at my current employer and 30 years overall in my field I was let go. At 52 years of age it is surely a shock to one's system and bank account. My place was relocated to another part of the country and I will not be going with them. In the first place, if you can believe it they did not offer me my job "in the new location" and I probably wouldn't have gone if they did. Anyway, I now join the 10.3% of unemployed Americans on the unemployment line. The total is probably more like 12-15% but the government doesn't want you to know the real number.
At 52, I must now "start over", a daunting task, especially in my field which is very difficult to get jobs in.
Our beloved Country is in a real bad way. Companies in times like these tell people that "they should be happy that they have jobs". This is very similar to what happened during the great depression, where companies knew they had employees by the you know whats and that they should be grateful that they had jobs. This is going on today as well. People are giving into these big companies, working for lower wages and bad health plans, unions are dropping like flies and Socialism will become the only option because people will NEED the government to survive. Heaven help us. Thanks for listening to me as I vent. At least I have my Darts! (for now)

Man that blows 6770Dartman. Try to keep a positive attitude if possible and vent here when you feel the need. We are behind you.

just goes to show... no one is really is really safe in the job market.
I wish you good luck

I am sorry to hear that.like homecloned said feel free to vent here as much and whenever you want.I had some good news today, almost feel bad about posting it now, good luck Dartman.

Sorry to hear of your situation.
You would think after 18 yrs your experience would not be disposable.
Regretfully the corporate mentality is probably that they could replace you with a cheaper, hungrier young version.

Hey 6770Dartman-

What do you do? What are your skills? Put out the word here at FABO, and somebody just might have the job you need. Worth a shot...

Thanks to all. I am a television director and have been since 1979. The business is changing, the jobs are getting rarer and the economy is not helping matters.
Thanks to all my new FABO friends. This has been a really hard day!

Get a load of this. I had a guy quit me that has worked for me for at least 5 yrs. He told a lot of different people that he did but still has yet to inform me of the fact. Times must not be as tough as we all think. Communication was not his forte'. You can treat some people too good. You'll make it even if it's in another field.

Sorry to hear about your job loss. Some employers like to find a way to dispose of guys in there 50's. You just become too expensive to keep due to health issues, higher pay, benefits. Some VP well get rewarded for his brilliant management. Keep your chin up and in time you may find something rewarding and it happens to lots of guys today.

Sorry to hear 6770 and I can imagine how difficult it must be to find employment in your field. I had to take a kind of lower lateral move after 9 months of unemployment but thank Goodness I found something. I wish you the best of luck on your search.

hang in there. i have been with the same plumbing company for 30 years and i sweat my job every day. some times i wonder which is worse worrying or being laid off.

Very sorry to hear about the job loss there 6770! Being in my middle 50's as well I understand about the fact it might be hard to find another job if I were to get laid off. I hope you find something comperable very soon and the toys get to stay!!!

sorry about your troubles, if you need to vent you are among friends, for the most lol, so feel free. i recently left the post office. the facility i worked at has started head hunting people by the sounds of it, don't think anybodies job is actually safe anymore....

this must make going to work seem stressful as hell.......

Way sucks and when that gets done to one in our age group no shots fired, then boom.. really .... well we can say those wors here. I am sorry man!

Maybe come self employed for the rest of your life, that is what I did.

good luck to you..:)

Happehed to me in '04 after 17 years. They wanted me to reapply for the same job for less wages, start over on my pension etc. I landed on my feet and I ended up getting a better job! Things happen for a reason. It may not seem good at the time but it will end up ok,I'm sure of it.

My family will pray for you and your family. Please try to keep your head up and remember that it can only get better. My wife's hours are being cut back at her job so that the company will not cover her health insurance. This sux!!!!!!!!! I am self employed and work is extremely slow for me right now but I just leave it in God's hands. That's all you can do. We are here for you out here.

Sorry to hear about your job loss.I am losing mine Dec 22nd after 15 years of service. But they keep saying its getting better??
