ALERT!! SOUND THE ALARM!!..

Every single head I port breaks through at the valve cover bolt. And the iron heads and even the early W2's I break through the bolt boss of the short bolt for the upper row of head bolts. That's just how it is.

I don't think that was his main concern..

Maybe not. But I've seen guys nearly cry over stuff like that.

The core shift was unacceptable.

I've done more welding on heads before I ever lay a grinder to them than I care to remember.

On certain SBC heads I used to mill away the top of the head above the intake ports from the valve cover rail back about and inch and a half IIRC and then weld the entire area and then start on the port work.

I don't miss those days.

I went for the regular 170cc complete SB heads, a billet nitrous bottle bracket, and the $7 billet handle dipstick (why not?).

As my luck would have it one head looks great (visual check only), just the usual shavings in tapped holes below the helicoils:

While the other had such bad core shift in one intake port that that you can stack pennies behind the ledge. It looks like somebody hit both sides with a carbide and let it go.

Of course, the port is broken through into the bottom of the valve cover hole, but worse than some of the CNC ported ones:

Here is the step from inside, looking back with a bore scope, it must be 3/16"+:

I would have just cleaned it up when I do the other touching up, but I don't know what else is off or if there's thin spots with water around it anywhere. Jason at Speedmaster had me send this one back (their pre-paid label), they got it back at the first of the week, and I got an email from him yesterday that they have sent a replacement. I hope this next one is okay, fingers crossed!

At least the customer support seems to be there. Having worked in manufacturing for 35 years, I can confirm that the craziest crap can get past the QC guy, whether it is in the US, China, or Mexico. Doesn't matter, **** happens. Seems that SM tries to take care of the customer for the most part.

Yes, it just takes time. They had a lot of orders to fill with the sale, then they lost people to the PRI show after that. I'm sure they'll make it right given time. Heck, that's more than a lot of places do now!

Great News!!!
Just got an email from SM, the bauxite ore will be mined next month in Guinea to refine into suitable aluminum to cast my SB heads in China sometime in the new year !
I'm stoked !!!

They’re lying to you.
They’re waiting for a freighter loaded to the gils with crushed aluminum cans to be recycled...... and that will become your heads.:usflag:

Well that's a first somebody telling me I don't have brains LOL anyways it could only happen on the internet.. so what did the email say? Did they give you an exact time or did they say they're out of stock and that's when they expect to have some more?...

Naw, was just BS'ing, when I bought the heads someone swiped my card info, had to X out the card and get another, thankfully the bank caught on and I didn't have to pay for their little shopping spree, now I'm wondering if they canked My order to cover up their thievery. Gonna call tomorrow, been about a month, rx'd the head and main studs as well as some intake gaskets weeks ago and that's it.

I had a feeling I'd see those cans again, I turned them in to pay for the heads, just a small world going round in a circle ! :)

As I recall wasn't it you that called them and complained about them giving away your card information or something?..

Yep, whoever it was went to a Hollister and an Uggs store, both are real close to SM. I did call and talked to a CNS (customer no service) rep, he told me they were working on the order, I asked to be transferred to the accounting dept. He came back online and told me they said "take it up with your card company" sheesh !

Yep, bought the non CNC loaded SB heads with roller rockers and pushrod setup.

Might be time to get Smiley a blender full of cash! ( Training Day ref.)

Complicated? hell, ya yank it off the shelf, stuff it in a box, print a label, and snort another line.
