read the last couple of post, and not to butt in but.... is this just a cometic thing on the cooling? 'Cause I thought SM/Eddy's take a regular head gasket - say 1008 fel pro?

My son has regular LA felpros 8553 on his edelbrock headed 360. Been on a lot of years and no trouble. I don't know if that helps, just throwing it out there...
I think that phone call i've been putting off needs to happen tomorrow. I read the info about the cooling passage differences somewhere, but I can't recall where, and I'm 100% sure I would want some kind of confirmation. The only thing I'm sure of is that they list a different gasket.

The only thing I can think of is the holes for the cooling are a little bigger..
These have to line up with the same holes that are on the Block no?...
That's my thought. I found a post on moparts that talked about the issue, but mentions the magnum version of the heads.'

Yeah they have the 1008 listed for Edelbrock and another one as well... They list and Edelbrock gasket but it's probably just a relabel 8553 as it's about the same thickness... when you look the gasket out there's some guy complaining that it's just a blue fel pro gasket with Edelbrock name on the package...

Even the Speedmaster site says to use the recommended stuff for Edelbrock as I recall...

I emailed Cometic before I ordered for my small block. I saw so many different part numbers my head was spinning. I asked what was different about the C5917 because that note j par posted, saying EQ or Edelbrock heads. I have the Magnum version Edelbrock head so I worried about getting something else.
Cometic responded saying the difference is specifically around the coolant passages to match those heads.
If these C5917 gaskets show up on time, they should be here around the end of next week. I got my fingers crossed.
On the Summit site, you get different results if you select small block LA engine family or small block Magnum engine family. I guess Cometic knows what they are doing, and Summit has decent listings.

Maybe not. I never asked them if this applied to LA version Edelbrock heads, since I was only worried about the Magnum version at the time. I will try to compare coolant passages of the heads themselves this weekend. Maybe that will tell us more. My Magnum Edelbrocks are not here with me, so comparison will likely be Saturday.

Just remembered I have pictures of my EQ 318A heads that just came back from the machine shop a couple weeks ago. I looked at a set of Speedmaster aluminum heads I have here and the coolant passages are all round, same as LA version Edelbrock heads.
The EQ heads were always designed as a Magnum head to begin with, and it's coolant passages are like triangles, and maybe bigger than Speedmaster and LA heads.
So, if you guys are running Speedmaster or LA version Edelbrock heads, you should be good with any Cometic gasket that does NOT specify that it's for EQ heads. That means j par ordered the right ones for his, i think.

Yeah those are pretty different...
To me they would have to line up if they're LA on LA... I don't understand how they can change ports for water in the LA based aluminum heads and make them work on an LA block?..

I don’t think the LA based aluminum heads changed, if I understood that correctly. The Magnum heads are the different ones. Chrysler changed the coolant pages when the Magnum heads came out, then EQ kept that for their replacements.
The Cometic gasket likely has a raised embossed sealing ring around the coolant ports. That would make sense why the LA gaskets may not seal, because the smaller raised area would fall into that bigger triangle passage on the Magnum.
