All hail the Plymouth Horizon

-
Managed a sales fleet of them from 79 to 82.Some had Italian front wheel bearings that didn't last too long. The stick shift ones the plastic bushings needed changed once in awhile. All ran 100K + with no problem.

Had 9 of either the horizon or omni models. Great little cars...except door handles used break off all the time. Had a fender bender with a Cadillac...I drove home the caddy was towed away. Would buy another if I could find a good example.

My dad had a Horizon and an Omni. He loved them.

I took my driver's license test in a Plymouth Sapporo. Remember them?

I could not fit in them, or begin to drive them safely, due to my lanky body.
Rear view mirror obstructed front view.
No place for elbows or knees.
Always hitting my head on the window/door.
Liked the 4 spd despite no feel at all, and was satisfied with the acceleration.
But overall, as a rental car, I was ashamed of Chrysler and wondered if this was what it would be forever.
I also rented a 1984 Dodge 600 K car in Baltimore. First talking Dodge.
...
" A door is a jar".
No, a door is a door. A JAR is a jar.

" Your windshield washer fluid is low ".

No, I've used the washers only three times since full, and just used a short exit ramp that confused your level sensor, and could you please calm down?

Seriously, I waited from 1979 to this year before Chrysler had built, and I could afford to buy a vehicle I fit in, at 3 years old and 100kmiles.

I had an omni something about the interior design that made my 2 Pro Fosgate 12's with a punch 150 pound harder than any other car I've owned.

I bought three new 2-door Horizons...'79, '82 and '87. The VW-based engine in the '79 began burning oil at about 70k, but the 2.2s in the later ones were great. All had automatics, and they were flawless. All got well over 30 mpg in my 25-mile daily commute of mixed driving.

My only complaints were door handles and carbs, and carbs were expensive.

Overall, they served me well and were far better quality, and performed better than friend's Chevettes and Pintos.

I had the shifter bushing on one let go on my way to Mopars at Englishtown. Tied the linkage together and drive the car all weekend with 2,3 and 5th gears. I broke a few handles too...lol. One of the best carb guys at the time's basic tuning instruction: "cut the green wire". I liked the earlier 2bbl carb more than the 87 electric carb. But the EFI one was hands down the best. Had them past 115mph on a bunch of occasions too.
