Am I crazy or is this project Duster way overpriced?

-
Yep, a Duster just sold at auction for 160,000 (71 340- best in the Country) highest sale ever. We A-body guys know just how good they are. Everyone had a A-body in the family!

I would look some-where besides Hemmings. There was a wonderful 6 very clean on Ebay for 12K maybe. I posted it on here for the slant 6 guys/

That’s the “I have MoPar Gold” sickness. The car has been given generous offers that I’d never give.

The man is insane for his asking price and if he is stubborn enough, it’ll rust away into the ground.

I paid 7K for a 72 slant duster in '21....ish. 66 K on the clock. Sunbaked but the dash pad wasn't affected, just the seats. No rattles. Mileage might be actual.

I was practicing detachment at one point (mind the word "practicing" here) and put it up for an outrageous price. I figured, "hell, i paid too much, and i really don't want it to sell, but if it did, what price would i sleep with at night?".

Well, some dude outright sent me a bodily injury response.

So as much as that dude is in the wrong, i accept some responsibility for being an involved party to his 'coming unhinged' party.

If that thing was running/ driving/stopping with less rust and more 'creampuffy' id pay maybe 12 (if i had it and had to have it) otherwise your money is better spent elsewhere.

$0.02

I paid $800 for a complete and running 73 Duster with a slant 6. Granted it was a killer deal but there are so many out there for sale that are outrageously priced. If it isn't cherry, it shouldn't have a 5 digit selling price and is definitely over priced.

I have had many 70-2 Dusters over the years as many if us, but those year cars as projects, around our 4-5 state area have dried up and IF you find one, they are even more stupid priced as 99% of all the projects out there anyway. Just life.

Last year I was seriously searching for a 73 up Duster project, after months I did find one 6 hours West but I could not be gone for a full day. Livestock held me down. It was a father son project that dried and up was actually priced fair. Then I would occasionally find a 73 up project up around Dallas area. Like they always admit to, they bought the project in Ok. for $1500, no title, missing lots of parts for a roller,, and they demand $3500! Then.... I gave up and bought a 66 running Fairlane for pennies compared. Always lked me some Ford anyway! :poke:  :BangHead:

Back in the mid to late 90s in my area, you could buy lots of early 70s Mopars for hundreds of dollars, I had several for well under $1000 each. They might have had some rust but they had years of driving left in them.

When does rust not equal rust??? He has a closeup of the tail panel that clearly has rust on it, yet he says it has no rust but only a little surface rust??

Original paint? Since when was the roof rail gutter trim painted body colour? Weren’t they all chrome? Yet the posting says original paint? If the roof rail gutter trim got sprayed yellow something tells me other parts of the car also were resprayed. Sure it has original paint but it’s under non original paint.

$15k is the ‘I don’t wanna sell it price’.

Its like the guys that swear their car only has 26,833 miles because that is what shows on the odometer!

But there is surface rust and rust that took out the frame, but I agree... Rust is still rust.

Heck, I am so old, I remember when no one wanted a original 340 Duster because it was a Duster or when no one wanted a 67 383 Cuda,,, well, because....

They wanted a charger instead...I was one of the dumbasses

We all have our”I remember when they were$50.00”!!! I really don’t know how many cars trucks I have bought and sold. “IF” it was your car 15 would be reasonable but since it is” someone else’s” it’s too expensive. I priced my lil red SE for 22 to a guy and just like you he just about had a heart attack. Last year I priced a 67 dart gt for 14, another heart attack!

Today.
I say just about the only way to ever buy a project for what it is really worth, is to get one off a hobbiest that has restored 100% or even just a little. They have an understanding. The dudes that has them for sale on Marketplace, CL have no clue. They simply research what the other guys are asking for similar project car and then the $$$ they see at Mecum, BJ on TV makes them totally stupid. There should be a correlation between the price of a POS project and a restored car or even a decent driver.
,
I also get a chuckle from the guy that wants an "entry level' classic, he tells me he wants a such and such (enter your choice, slant Duster for example), it must have decent paint ( but great driver quality paint with a little grit or scratch won't do), needs it to run and drive decent (perfect) ( OK he expects, basically new carb, belts, hoses, alt, rad, and compression like it left the factory ( rebuilt engine?), decent interior (all replaced a few years ago, with only one seam starting to undo will not suffice), perfect glass ( the one gravel peck kills that) etc etc....and he wants it for $3500 with new tires and current tags. I see it every week with guys calling on my 75 straight six AMC Hornet.
They would come look but I would have to trade for an old aworeout Honda Civic or a deer stand. But... I'm, an hour or so away... too far.  :BangHead:

Hey, now! Some of them new fancy deer stands are awfully nice!

If you really want to know why the aftermarket don’t follow Chrysler products, just look at the ones that”supposedly” love these cars. It’s called” money” and how they won’t buy parts or cars unless they are” cheap” but high quality

I know of 3 here locally. One is $37,950.00, the other is 37,500.00 and another is $54,000.00 FOR DUSTERS!!!! That is just nuts.

For those that did not live the era.
I admit I am spoiled from the "old days" when the "muscle cars" built in the 60s, early 70s first came into favor. (They were mostly sorta woreout sorta rusty mustly OLD cars unless a garage pampered 70 hemi Cuda.) Which was mid 80s when people realized new cars of the late 70s into that present day of like '85 were BORING! In '85 the '68 Roadrunner was almost 20 years old soon to be considered an "antique." They could easily be found if a person looked and asked around. But a $ went further in '85! The hunt for the "muscle" car as they would be known was FUN! Fun because they could be found and afforded. The hobbiest built cars. The old cars were not lossing propositions!

Now it is like 40 years later than 1985! Things change! It takes more $ to buy a loaf of bread. There are people that can not make a cup of coffee.
People buy old Mopars restored in the 90s and think they are survivors! They think the speedo tells them their real mileage! They think if the block and trans has the cars vin it is a REAL car.. every one of them!! They never knew anyone ever had a trim or vin tag repoped. 90% of the roller/projects on Marketplace today aren't even decent parts cars! and 98% insanely priced.

 :poke: :BangHead:  :steering: :steering: :steering: :steering: :steering:
