Anyone had to take this survey? Its basically a long form census. The more I read about it on-line the less I want to take it.

yesterday a census bureau worker showed up on our front porch requesting that she come inside and watch us take this survey.We have a newborn at home and my wife really doesn't have the time to take the 70 questions survey or want this random lady to enter our house. The census bureau's website states that is is illegal to refuse this survey. However on line I have read that the government cant request any thing more than name, date of birth, and ethnicity.
 
Isn't the census over?

Regardless...... Someone like that shows up at my house they will be quickly escorted to the street.

Sounds like a scammer.
 
I was puzzled by it also. You can go to the U.S. Census website:

It the bottom of the page there is a link to this survey. It looks legit.

If it's the survey I'm familiar with, that survey is legal but can be a real pain. A friend of mine signed up because they thought they were doing the government a favor plus they pay you some small amount. Turns out the survey people show up every few months and don't stop bugging you till you answer the survey. It goes on for a couple of years.
 
I got one of those a few weeks ago. Filled it out dutifully and mailed it back just like the instructions said. :-D It was a lot more personal than the regular census ever gets, requesting precise info about income, utilities used and how much I pay for them, ethnicity, marital status, whether I was on public assistance, how -- and how far -- I traveled to work / school, etc. It took almost an hour to fill out for just Billy and I.

I didn't see anything in the paperwork about getting paid to complete it, haven't heard from anyone since and no one has come by the house.

If you believe what the government tells you, they use the additional special info to properly apply federal monies for schools, highway projects and the like. Personally, I thought it was fairly invasive.

Yea we never got any thing in the mail. From what I have read most people receive it this way.

Yea I was able to see a sample of the survey online. Some of the questions seemed a little odd to me. I called my representatives office. They told me that they cant tell me not to take it, but have never heard of any one getting in trouble for not taking it. I'm going to give it a week to see if this lady stops buy again.
 
You CAN refuse to take it and without any repercussions! It is long term harmless and does help the government with planning so completing it is up to you. Whatever the case, they sure as hell have no right to intrude into your home.
