Anyone Else Like Beer Memorabilia?

-
Just stopped by a friend's shop,he just bought a large collection that included three 4 globe Hamm's noens. Selling the worst of the three for $1750. He will make more selling the collection, than I'll make working this year. Insane what old items bring.

I saw him sell an original, still in the crate one of these 5 years ago. These things aren't coming down in price.

That's awesome. I'm trying to convince my wife that. I try to buy my signs/lights at a good price knowing that they'll only appreciate in value. Plus, they're so damned cool to look at while you're sipping a cold one.

Here's my latest project. It's a 1962 Blatz beer unicyclist. The lady selling it said that the bulb needed to be replaced and that the wheel/leg didn't move so I was able to pick it up at a good price. Turns out the bulb was just loose and it needed a $2 chain from the hardware store to work properly. I really like this sign.

A dandy find Brian  My uncle in Fla. has one in his garage that worked last time I seen it 16 years ago.
I LIKE IT :thumbsup::thumbsup:

Picked up these three at an auction for $22 for the lot. I couldn't make it to the auction dad was going to the sale anyway so I asked him to bid on some framed print advertising that was hanging in the shop. He didn't see them so he bought me these instead. It was the estate of a friend, his shop was the local hangout. So it has a special meaning to me.
They need some cleaning, anybody have some does and don't on cleaning them? Any sights that has tips?

Nice score! I've been doing this for a little while now and can help a little. Be very careful. 50 year old plastic that has been exposed to light and heat can be very fragile and brittle. I cracked a sign just turning it over while cleaning it. I use Dawn dish soap and hot water to disolve the dust, dirt and nicotine. Be careful, anything stronger can stain the plastic or even destroy it. A magic erasure works good too. My wife says that I wash my signs more carefully than I used to wash our babies! As far as websites, I don't know of any but I'm on several Facebook pages where people buy, sell and share old beer stuff. I get lots of good tips and pointers there.

Here's my latest score. I bought a complete Schlitz beer collection from a gal for $200. It had over a hundred different pieces including a bunch of cans, bottles, ash trays etc but the lights didn't work so she priced it cheap. I got them home and found that most of bulbs were either burned out or missing, and the others just needed to be coaxed back into life by holding down the on/off button a few times. I sold all of the small stuff to a Schlitz collector for $200 to break even and then last week sold him four more signs/lights for $300. I kept the two biggest, nicest ones for myself. The large globe is from 1977 and the inside rotates to make it look like the ocean is moving. The hanging light is from 1962 (same as me) and the larger part is supposed to rotate. That one is my next project. It lights up but the motor that rotates it is burned out and isn't common anymore so I'll have to adapt another motor to it. I really enjoy working on these old signs and getting them back to their former glory!

Cool. Thought I was finally going to get caught up on my projects, now I have these
I will hunt for more. But I won't do eBay, because to me it take the thrill out of the hunt.

No, eBay is for selling. I go to garage sales, estate sales, yard sales, swap meets, Craigslist and FB Marketplace to find my signs. The thrill of the hunt and the find is what it is all about. When I see a good deal and jump in the car, my heart starts racing and my adrenaline starts flowing! It's an addictive hobby at this point.

Wow, some really cool finds in here!

My grandparents owned a bar in Big Bone KY and country store that I worked at in the summers as a kid. They had an 8’x8’ shed that was stacked to the ceiling with neons, sandwich boards, beer taps, etc. from the 70’s and 80’s.

When I went back as an adult I wanted to go through it and check it out again but a flood had taken the shed away.

I like beer, and old things like the Mickey big mouth bottle with the pull tops that apparently sissy people cut their fingers with and complained, now they are no more...the old barrel bud bottles are cool, I think Bud oughtenta do a retro bottle campaign. Molson Golden was good too. Does anybody remember Calgary Amber lager? havent seen it in years, oh and Heineken, good stuff. You couldn't pay me to drink Busch these days, that was for kids....

I stood for over an hour yesterday to be second in line at an estate sale that advertised "Hamm's collectables". Definitely worth the wait!

so Hamm's is a beer? Can say I've never seen it around here or in my travels in last 50 yrs (doesn't mean it ain't great!). Now P.O.C or Blatz.....

And 90% of Mopar A bodies were grocery getters that the rest of the world turned their noses up at. Now 50 years later, they're suddenly some great car??? The Hamm's bear campaign is an iconic marketing/sales strategy that is taught around the country in our colleges and universities, and it's merchandise is one of the most collectable of the post prohibition beers. It about nostalgia. I'd be willing to bet most of the guy's my age recognize the theme music.

Very true, but the beer itself isn't anything to write home about. I have a friend who has made a lot of money selling Hamm's memorabilia, and he's got some very cool pieces that would fetch stupid money. It's kinda sad though, it's not a popular hobby amongst the younger adults today, go to a beer show, and if your around 40, you're the young guy.

Yup. I know a guy who is into Mopars AND Hamm's collectables. He's got cars and collectables that would make your chin drop. I am going with him to my first beer collectables convention in Omaha Labor Day weekend. We are both in our mid fifties. Should be a beer drinking good time trading from room to room the night before. I'm already saving up my allowance for it.

We used to buy kegs of Hamm's for $17 direct from the distributor. Kids would say Hamm's?!?! Funny thing, after about the third beer, no one said another word!

I had one, a few years ago, don't need another. But I like IPA's so I drink what a lot of people think is gross.

My friend picked up a sign that was on the corner of a building, pre prohibition era, as a gift from one of his buddies, also has a sign off a truck, pre prohibition as well, valued at $5-10k. He got it for $500! Had to keep the seller from coming in the beer show so he didn't have to play a bidding game. Hamm's sure did put their name on any type of product, still see things I never would have associated with a beer company. I'll try to post some pics of my friends signs.

Here's a couple pics.

Got this still in the crate, it was at a vo-tech school and got put away up in the attic.

He has one of these signs. Couldn't find a pic of the truck signage.

That's my buddy holding the signs in the last pic! Steve has been a big help when I find Hamm's stuff and need to know what it's worth. I sent him a sign last month that he needs parts from and he sent me two lights in return. He said if I'd drive 6 hours north he'd give me a ride in his Demon!

You realize that we're talking about the same guy right? Steve has been a big help when I find Hamm's stuff and need to know what it's worth. You said Omaha, and I thought so. Have you seen pictures of his collection?

Yeah, he had people shooting a TV show come to visit the "Bear Cave" last week. He has a warehouse full of stuff that he has doubles of or it's just not good enough to be displayed in his collection. When you drive around in a mini-van that says Dr. Hamm's on it and I buy Hamm's stuff, people will stop you and give you leads on stuff.
