I have no idea... not offering advice, just the observation. Your idea seems reasonable to me. Need to tighten it up somehow, because yours isn't inset as much as an earlier car is, it would appear.

Let me get a pic of mine... just a few...

Here's pics of a '72 Swinger's. Doesn't it look a lot deeper of an inset than yours?

That may be the ticket...and there isn't that much stress on the ring so it can be a bit thinner..

Just for yucks, i tried my gas cap w/o the ring.. it does need a spacer.

What do you think 4mula ?

ian.

Hmmmm.... As for modifying the adapter... have at it man. That would be my go to answer if it were me.
As for the different depths.... It doesn't really appear that its any shallower than most. Granted we are all trying to decipher this by a picture, but it doesn't look the difference that yours seems to be sticking out.

As for you having one of 3 74/75s.... obviously not, but you do seem to be among the very few that have come across this problem.

Looking at this, and putting a little thought into it, I cant see any obvious answer for you other than to modify the adapter by removing a little material from the backside.

HOWEVER!!! Be aware, that if you remove it from the back surface, that the original filler neck surface will be the next surface to cause an interference.
In that case it wouldnt be as easy to remove material very nicely with general hand tools.
Ill see if I can post up pictures of mine when I first installed it. We can try to use it as a comparison.

As for the end result..... Because you are among the very few that has had any issue, if you have NOT modified the adapter at all, and if you are unhappy with having to modify the adapter to fit your car. If you will send it back I will refund you your cash and shipping charges.
I would like to "right" the situation and allow you to be content with the end solution whatever it may be. :)
Donnie

Here are a few photos. The fitment on my original adapter, and then I moved it away 1/32 further from the body.
Then a 1970 Dart from a few pages back in this thread. :)

the adapter fits the same on my 66, cap is flush with the body, no adapter visible,
it just spaces it far enough away for the hinge and latch to work without rubbing the body

So I am 1 of three cars that is a '74/75 ?

Here is a pic of filler neck...there is a thin cork washer between the car and the filler neck..

Hope you can help us ?

I too have a 74+ and mine sticks out like yours. Also you, like me have the 3 screw filler neck mounting unlike the earlier folks who have 4 (as the caps also have) this has prevented me from installing it thusfar. Looks like I will have to get an earlier filler neck, tack the 3 holes shut and smooth, then redrill for 4 holes.

Also, let me revisit this issue with my friend and see exactly what he did. For some reason I have it in my head that he had a filler neck with several different pieces. It seemed really odd to me.

This pic caught my attention.. I need a little clarification, as my adapter fit perfect.. What I noticed is your filler neck appears to mount on the outside of the quarter.. (like the slid it in from the outside and bolted it down... On my 69 Dart it was exactly the opposite.. the filler neck was mounted to the inside of the quarter. only the heads of the screws were on the outside of the quarter... did Ma Mopar do it 2 different ways?? Or was mine a fluke? Anyone else have any insight on this?

I was thinking the same thing as you Bill, wondered if it could be mounted that way...and if so maybe that would help with fitment.

BILL!!!!!!!!!!! You nailed it! Your above comment rang a bell!
That was exactly the situation! My 69 is also on the inside of the quarter. Not the outside. It seems that NOT ALL of the later model cars are installed like that either.
I am also thinking in the case of my friends Duster, that there was yet another ring/spacer/retainer of some sort that also held his off a bit. He did have a fix for it, and managed to mount his just fine but Im not seeing an easy solution to this really. Not with the current product as it is... anyhow.

Well... that would certianly explain the fit issues then.. So I would imagine if your filler neck is mounted from the outside of the quarter your choices would be to pull the filler neck from the tank and reinstall it on the inside of the quarter.. or mill the inside of the adapter down a wee bit...

Thats weird that Mopar would mount the filler neck two different ways..

I think it is weird also, but we are talking Dodge Dart.....and Plymouth Duster two different manufacturers yes still Mopar but different

I was over checking out the Valiant last night and snapped a picture of my filler neck and the install of the tube itself.

wow....i wonder if the neck will on the inside and isn't the car body the "nuts" for the screws ?

Thanks
Ian.

My Dart's filler neck was mounted exactly like this... the screws went through the quarter and into the filler neck flange..

Indeed. The screws are just a typical sheet metal pointed screw and there is no actual nut.

Ill have to try to figure up what the average difference is, and maybe make a separate one for these cars. We shall see.

Its interesting that not many have come back to me with this issue since it sounds as if this may be a common "revision" around 1974 or so. It could be that some people didn't mind the additional gap? Or....possibly I just haven't had a huge customer base in the later model cars?

I think you hit the nail on the head there my friend.. It is possibly a cross between people not minding the gap (or not realizing the gap was larger than normal) and a larger customer base pre whenever mopar decided to start mounting the filler neck differently lol

I would like to know if it's the year or style....meaning we are talking Duster, so is it 72 Duster is different than 74 up Duster or 67-72 Dart different than 74 Duster...I would like to see the difference Dart Sport and Dart Swinger or just Dart.....and 72 Duster verse's Dart Sport of same year....74 Duster 74 Dart Sport.....Do we know the differences. Just wondering myself and trying to dig a little further. :)

I agree more research is probably needed here
