Hi,

I have a B&M ratchet shifter that I bought off a member here. From B&M, I bought a cable and the mounting infrastructure that goes on my 727.

I had the 727 rebuilt with a shift kit.

The 727 has been installed and connected with the 8 3/4 with the drive shaft. I am assuming the trans is in nutral because I can spin the tires.

The directions that I have with the mounting hardware is that I shift the trans with my fingers ???

Has anyone set their car up this combination ?

Thanks
Ian.

Bad,

How to actually set this up...I cannot change gears in my trans with my fingers. B&M states that I can toast my trans in short order if I don't do this properly.

Do you have this set up ?

Thanks
Ian,

FIRST do you have the correct shift lever and cable mount? The BM shifter (as well as the Cheetah) both use special transmission levers proprietary to those shifters. The BM lever is very short, and I can see why it might be difficult to move with your fingers.

You have the correct destructions? You can download 'em

Some / all BM shifters have a stop that might need to be installed to allow/ disallow further movement for GM shift patterns.

I Don't think I set mine up strictly by the destructions----I set mine up by "feeling" the shifter in first / neutral (mine's reverse pattern) to be sure the "click" of the trans lever "feel" matched the gates in the shifter.

Then I checked park to be sure the neutral safety switch "made," and adjusted a turn or two on the cable end to compensate that.

There's been discussion that the trans shaft/ inner comb can generate "it's own" internal play

I use a Hurst Pro-Matic right now but they all set up essentially the same. So you can't move the gear selector arm on the trans by hand? Some of them can be a little stiff, but I've never not been able to move one by hand.

When they talk about doing so, you need to do that to adjust the cable properly. I started in 1st gear and adjusted to that and then fine tuned it.

Not sure what you are asking either? I have a Hurst in mine and you have to get under the car and shift it with your hand into neutral. With your shifter in neutral connect the cable and make sure it slide right into the shifter lever on the trans. From there you should be able to run it through the gears and make sure it is going into all of them. I set the cable in neutral then double check the adjustment on park.

And just because you can't shift it with your fingers doesn't mean you will damage the trans. I think what they are getting at is like described in post above is being able to set it somewhere to get things aligned properly.

The important thing to remember is getting the cable adjusted so the rooster comb is fully seated when in any particular gear in it's indent.
