B&M shifter not catching gear?

B&M star shifter.. Having issue of this part >see arrow< fully seating into the 1st gear notch (circled) and slips right out when I shift into ratchet gear or even just 1st gear. Is there something out of adjustment? Or is it just worn out? This is an all of the sudden issue. TIA

Wow! If I want to make something complicated that should be simple, I will bet B & M to design it.
One of the best shifters ever made was the early cable operated Mopar console shifters. Silky smooth operation, like a knife through butter. I modified the gate on a couple of them for positive gear locking.

I’m no expert but from the photos it looks like the pivot bushing (handle to base) is worn throwing the angle off.
Either that or is something not returning or stuck? Cable alignment off?
Just spit balling from the two photos.
Let us know what you find.

Everything seems to be in order. Nothing has changed and was working fine. Then all of the sudden, it slips right out of 1st if I try to put it in ratchet or 1st. I’m going to upgrade to hurst, but in the meantime, I’m hoping someone knows a solution if there is one.

I always adjust the cable on these shifters with the car in first gear, and get it perfect there, and then confirm the other gears and N and P are ok. I have found that the PARK in mopar transmissions has alot of slop on the rooster tail compared to the gears. if you adjust your cable so that detent clip sits perfect in there in first gear....does it correct the issue? that being said, the fact it all of a sudden has a problem is weird. I have had the sheathing on the shifter cabled melt/bend/kink to where the trans lever travel doesn't match the shifter handle travel any longer. is the cable in good order? also had them rub through on hard surfaces like the trans case. i now slit some cheap rubber fuel hose and make a home made sleeve for shift cables. held on with a few zip ties.

hope it helps. for the record I love the B&M ratchets, and I hated the gated shifter I had afterwords. went from a quick silver, to a different brand gated shifter (Which literally cost me races) , back to a pro-ratchet with a reverse lockout lever. love it.

Thanks! I’m gonna give that tip a shot! The cable is less than a year old. It’s about as impeded as possible. No concerning bends. I partially suspect after you mentioned that stock park gear has slop, that perhaps the notch at first gear may have worn down and no longer grabs as it once did. That makes sense.

Just got done resetting the cable and adjusting it in first. It’s all good now! Thank you so much!
 
BM shifters are far far more critical to wear, damage, and adjustment than are say, Cheetah. This is because the levers on BM are shorter, and therefore the cable moves less. This means that any play in the pivots, cable ends, or "spring" in the cable itself becomes a larger percentage of the overall movement. Because of this they are also more critical to proper adjustment
