Barracuda spare back glass storage

-
Every time I go to a car show with my 66 Barracuda, I invariably have someone come up to make a comment about the back glass. Just this weekend, I heard "I bet you hope that back window doesn't ever get broken because they are so hard to find" or "Wow, if you ever had to replaced that rear window it would be really expensive if you could even find one". When I inform them that the glass is not as rare as everyone thinks and that I have a spare in my garage that I paid $40 for, they look at me like I don't know what I am talking about or they think I am lying. When I bought the spare I could have bought a second one from the same guy for another $40, but I couldn't transport two at the same time and did not feel like making another 5 hour round trip to go back to get it. One guy even said i must have bought that spare a long time ago because you can't get them that cheap anymore (bought it 3 years ago). I said "oh, have you been looking for one"? He said "No, I don't have a Barracuda, I just know they are not that cheap". He apparently has a crystal ball. Also, the last time I looked, there were three available on Craigslist in the Baltimore area.

The rarity and high cost is certainly a myth perpetuated by tv shows and magazines. Like others, everyone that sees my car comments about the high cost of the rear glass. I knew from the forum that most of that is not true but wanted a spare anyways. Thanks for the storage recommendations. I'll post a picture of how I store it later.

Last year at Carlisle A guy vending next to me had a tinted one with $50 on it Friday, Sunday it was free. I helped him load it back up. Hell I have three spares that came with my car. Now the front window is getting scarce!

You guys don't have any idea what you are talking about........They are rare and I have one captured in the rafters of my garage. :rofl:It will probably be there until I die because nobody needs one. What's worse is that Mopars are really scarce around S. Texas so the chances of selling it are 1 in a million!!!.

Sooooo you think you will never need a spare huh!!! Here's my story...
Back in the early 90s I had an '84 Camaro. If you're familiar with them the rear window was part of the trunk / hatchback. Rear window is similar to the 64-66 Barracuda window. Not as big but concave in nature. One day it was parked in the driveway, trunk facing the garage door and I hear this loud boom. I go outside and there's glass all over the ground and very little glass inside the car. My neighbor just happened to be mowing his lawn towards the direction of my car and he saw the whole thing happen and stated nothing hit it, it just exploded for no reason. This scene looked like this... all the glass was going. At least 90% of it was on the ground and very little in the car. The rear spoiler which is connected to the trunk hatch was sticking out one inch. This lead me to believe that the concave nature of the window and the extreme summer heat buildup inside caused it to explode. This caused the glass to go flying outward. No other explanation. Best way to envision it was if someone was laying in the rear compartment area and kicked the glass outward. So I always said I would get an extra one (and I did for $50.) just in case the same thing happened to my '66 Barracuda. From that day on, I always crack a window at least a half inch in the summer time..... anyway I have it stored upright in Storage with padding and boxes surrounding it.
I don't mean to burst your bubble but I see absolutely no comparison between 1964 glass and 1984 glass...
I bet the farm that the thicknesses are way different....

Wrapped mine in paper, split a foam pool noodle 1/2 way through and taped it over what would be the top edge when installed, stood up against the wall with that edge down, no worries

Great Idea!! Headed to dollar store now!!

So years ago I'm negotiating for my wife's 66 Barracuda. Actually from a member LOL I say that in jest because he joined the Forum with some sarcastic name like junkie fish and was a total Chevy guy. He only joined to sell the car and we haven't seen him since. Anyways it was about that time that that episode of Desert Rats was on and broke the rear glass and talked about it being worth $2, 000 LOL well during our negotiation he reminded me that that rear glass was worth $2, 000 LOL when I finally got myself up off the floor I offered him double his asking price in rear windows...
Of course his answer was no...
when I informed him of how much he had paid for the car and that I was not going to give him that much of a profit he was bewildered. After we'd finally made the deal I told him a good idea was not to leave the receipt for what you paid for it in the glove box...

I saw that show when I had cable.
Do I remember it correctly?
They made a big deal about not breaking the glass cause it so so rare.
Then they had it on some saw horses.
Yep, it got broken.
Then they freak out cause the boss would find out but miraculously "found" a car in another junk yard.
But they had to buy the whole car to get it.
Trick was they were converting a slant car to a V8 car and the spare car just happened to be a 273.
And of course, they didn't mention the K frame difference.
Sneaky, that was.

Yep that's the one and again they never showed the exact scene of it breaking. It's funny you say that because it was back when I had cable as well...
My thought was always able to have to fall way further than off a couple sawhorses for it to break...

Yesterday I was doing some cleanup in my garage. Had a back door glass from a Neon that I was tired of looking at. Put it in a trash bag and held it closed by the top. One light tap on he concrete and poof it went to a little pile in the bottom of the bag.

over and over, same conversation - I bought my spare (NOS, never been on a car) for $50 Canadian (US$38) in October 2018 ;)
