so i recently bought a 1970 340 engine n want to know whaat would be the best transmission for it. im taking my /6 with 904 tranny out of my demon n want to save as much money as possible. help

Could always rebuild the 904. Could buy a diy kit w/ a shift kit or send to a tranny shop. If the 340 is a basically stock or mild build, wouldn't be expensive at all to make the 904 handle.

I ran a 904 behind my 450hp small block for about 5k miles before I tore whole car down for rebuild, great transmissions. (EDIT: Only cost me about 1,500 to get my 904 built to handle the abuse of my small block with small amounts of spray. So for a less powerful engine, could do it for ALOT less)

i'd go with a 727 as you wouldn't have to dump much $ in it at all as just a factory trans can handle 350hp all day long and they're cheap and plentiful!

I have heard of people using their /6 904 behind their 318 with some minor work. Did they pull my chain or is it possible? If it isn't sorry for wrong information.

If you're just going to install a used transmission, I'd get a 727. If you're going to rebuild one, either trans will work fine but you'll need to do a few upgrades to the 904 to handle the extra HP. You can also reuse your driveshaft and yoke for the V8 904. If you haven't done so already, you'll need to do a rear axle assy and brake upgrade too.

put a v-8 904 in that baby. no need for a 727 or big dollars into a 904. just use quality parts and have someone that knows them rebuild it for ya.

Thats what i have a 904 with a shift kit behind my 340 and it does just fine so far. I'm pushin around 400hp. Good luck!!

How about a GM 200r4 in it so you can have and overdrive. They are smaller then the 727 and like the 904 takes less power to use then the 727

is there a difference between a 998,999 n 904?? because i found a 998 at a auto parts store and was thinking of buying it.. but not to sure if it will fit the 340. sorry about these dumb questions but im new n its my first car im putting together

A904
For standard-duty applications in smaller and lighter vehicles with 6-cylinder or small V8 engines, the compact A904 (later 30RH) was introduced in 1960. This transmission used a 10.75 in (27.3 cm) torque converter. There was also a smaller version of this transmission used in the Dodge Colt/Plymouth Champ cars made by Mitsubishi in Japan. This smaller transmission used a 10 in (25 cm) torque converter.
Uses:
1960-1976 170 , 198 , 225 Slant Six
1964-1969 273 LA-V8
1967-1978 318 LA-V8
1975-1978 360 2Bbl LA-V8
1972-c.1978 AMC I-6 "Torque-Command 6"
A998
The A998 (later, 31RH) was a medium-duty, wide-ratio version of the small-frame A904 transmission for use with medium-power V8 engines and the 3.9 L V6 engine.
The 998 was equipped with four direct friction plates.
These automatics had lower first and second gear ratios to allow the lower-powered engines to provide better acceleration without sacrificing highway fuel economy.
A999
The A999 (later 32RH) was a heavier-duty, wide-ratio version of the small-frame A904 transmission for use with medium-power V8 engines and the 3.9 L V6 engine.
The 999 was equipped with four or five direct friction plates.
These automatics had lower first and second gear ratios to allow the lower-powered engines to provide better acceleration without sacrificing highway fuel economy.

They were either stupid or totally yanking your chain. No way possible to use a /6 904 behind a small block without a custom adapter that would cost you a hefty amount.

A quality preped 904 [999] will work great. As with any TF trans, make sure the kick down linkage is correctly adjusted for proper trans life and shift quality. OR better yet, install a well designed manual shift valve body. End of shift problems. Increase trans life. Increase "fun" while driving. Well preped 999 TF transmissions are now living behind 700+ hp small blocks! I have one...

904,998,999

will do the job just right

I have a complete stock 727 with turbo action body valve
behind my 408 making 598 horses seens 3 years and before that in was behind my 365 pushing 500 horses and 125 hp of nitrous for 8 years
never hade preoblem with it

so a 904 behind mostly stock 340 why not
why spend money on something that can hold
the power you are making waste of money for me
