Best way to transport engine in pickup

-
I've used a tire before when nothing else was around.

Normally the engine is mounted to a skid/pallet though.

The last engine I hauled (a 273) I just dropped in the back of my Dakota, shoved some scrap landscape timbers under each side (between the bed & motor mounts/oil pan) and then strapped it down. Held fine going through twisting winding mountain roads.

You can see it (kinda) behind the spare tire on my Dakota. Just used one large ratchet binder and hooked it to my rear bumper and inside the bed.

I actually drove around for a month with that engine in the back of my truck, lol. Until I found the time to unload it... It's now powering my '84 Dodge D50

My family origenated from Priest River. Know that area up there well.

Cool. We do some fishing on Priest Lake and Pend O'reille (lake and river).

Ya . I miss that. Big lake Trout. Had an Uncle that had a cabin around Indian Beach. One of the first on the lake ,sold about tens years back for around $1,000,000 no ****. I guess land is going crazy up there right now.

Got it home. Nasty snow storm, many cars in the ditch, high winds, glad to be off the road.

Whoever listed a tire size got it wrong I'm afraid.
33x12.5 50 15 is the ticket. Sat in there like it was made for it.

Got a bonus - the guy who was buying the wiring harness and computer didn't show up so he threw it in. Will be up for sale.

I also got an O2 simulator so I can take the cat off my hemi (off road use only of course :) )

I use a floor mat I bought from Farm & Fleet that I leave in the bed of my truck all the time. To haul engines I just set the motor in the bed and tie it from the four corners, 2 high and 2 low. Have hauled a lot of engines this way hundreds of miles without problems.

Thats cool . Ever thought of hooking it up that way ?

Thanks for the replies. Just realized I'm an idiot - forgot to ask if the engine's from auto or std tranny application. Called - it's from an auto. I'm planning a 4 speed so I need to determine if this can work.

I know it won't have a proper flywheel but is the crank the same so I can buy a flywheel? Kinda hoping cause its the first low mileage one I've come across for a decent price.

I gotta 143 tooth flywheel for ya cheap...and use a press in roller pilot bearing from a Magnum?

That has to be the fastest forklift I ever seen! Seems like they could deploy a large airbag under the palletized vehicles that pops, cushions and prevents them from bouncing upside down. Funny stuff. As for transporting them...just put them in your trunk...big or small block...on a tire!

Build a cradle out of 4x4's so the oil pan rests on them. Then you can set it in the bed of the truck or on a dolly ...... whatever

Too big for the car size bellhousing. I went through the options in this thread:

The Airdrop vid is awesome... until I think about paying taxes... just forget I said that - it's a good laugh.

The V8 in the trunk trick is too :)

I used the sixgun dimensions to build the one on the right so I could get it off my engine stand. There's a 340, 318, and 6.2 diesel. I should make a trip to the metal salvage yard.

I bought a crate engine on Sunday. The guy already had it hooked on to a cherry picker. After the money was exchanged, he started picking it up off of the floor before I could tell him that I would have to come back with a truck. He thought I was going to put it into the back of my Ford Escape!?! He said, it'll fit in there...

I have the problem of having to travel 8 hours this weekend to pick up a Demon roller and 2 or 3 engines and trannies. Short bed PU truck. Probably gonna be leaving some behind. Hope the rear axle can carry it all. Gonna need some tires...
