I plan on turning my cop wheels into 16's or 17's so they look almost factory.
 
There is much more centripital mass in a huge rim, no sidewall flex or cushion for the pothole hit, and the tires are rather expensive let alone the spare you need to carry. Sure they may corner better, but most of our cars are not drifting or autocrossing, with a few exceptions. Drifting is...whack. Its like professional donuts on a track?
 
I've seen many combos that look great, and lots that don't appeal to me. Depends on the car and the overall setup including stance etc.

To me a Duster or Demon does not look right without the rear wheelwell filled up. But I understand those who stay factory, just not for me.

BTW, a friend has a convertable hemi cuda, and made his own set of widened "factory" rallies by cutting up 8 of them, making spacers out of 4, and welding together - looks great. The car is gorgeous in orange/white. I should post a pic.
 
I used to be an old die-hard. 15" max with tall sidewalls look great on the old Mopars. But now I've slowly been coming around. I'm starting to like the pro-touring look alot.

As far as rims and tires go, I think alot has to do with the style. Classic 5 spoke rims ( Cragar, Torque Thrust, etc. ) don't look good over 17" imho. Some of the newer style rims look great too ( ie. Steve Strope's Hammer ).

Yeah, the bigger rims do help in high performance driving. BUT the ride
quality SUCKS!
Our Dakota R/T has 17 in. rims. With the lowering kit on it. It handles
like a go kart. But it rides like one also.
I like the way the Duster rides. Got some sidewall on the tires to soak
up some of those bumps.
NO big rims for me.

I've driven a stock Dakota r/t and I thought the ride was fine. Firm but sure not harsh. Maybe its something with your lowering kit or shocks ?

There's a huge difference between a 17 or 18 inch wheel/ tire combo and say a 20 inch rubber band tire set up. I've hit some decent pot holes around these parts and have never worried about bending a rim. My 17 inch set up has some sidewall like most 17's would. And **** my car doesn't ride anything that could ever considered harsh.
 
Nothing turns my head away at a car show or cruise night quicker than big rims with low profile tires on a classic car. It just doesn't look right, giant hot wheels. Not only do 14s or 15s look right but you need sidewall on your tires to get them to hook up off the line. Part of the reason my wife bought a R/T instead of a SRT Challenger was the smaller rims.
 
And the poll does need 15 or less so what seems like most of us can vote.
 
I don't plan to drag race my car. I have nothing against old school. I'm almost 50 and I like some of the newer stuff. Like I stated my car is a daily driver and I will be making changes to be more comfortable,stop better,handle better and a few other things.

No this is not about old school wheels but newer wheels and tires for daily use.I have 15 inch wheels and tires on my car now and I' not happy with it.

Yep, same age over here. I seen a Caddy crossover with 225/65/18 wheels, they look great and the tires were not that low profile.

Some big old cars are closer to crossovers then cars today. A car today is flimsy, lightweight and most have a tiny engine--3 to 4 liters.

You have to ask if all these wheels would had been around and legal to use back in the 1960's, would the factory still went with 14--15 inch wheels, I think not. Not sure if 20 inch would had won but 16--17 yeah.

Big wheels can help make the car look newer--more expensive, IMO

As for old school, I'm keeping my dual quads and want nothing to do with F.I.
 
IMO i think any size can look good i just think it depends on how you go about your build a real custom look, looks good with bigger rims, but an old school hot rod/drag car look look good with 15's and such. i have a 2 wheel drive 68 d100 big block truck that i plan on using as a driver and i want something like 17 or 18s maybe bigger on the back and 16 or 17s on the front and on my future racecar 15s or maybe 16s but hey that's just my 2 cents
 
So are some 14's will go away I had to look really hard in NC for some 14 in tires
I never have problems trying to find 14's, practically all the shops around here offer them. I like this tire shop in Morganton, they give a nice discount through Farm Burea insurance.

I do forget though, we've had problems finding 13's for dad's Falcon.

Chip Foose makes some of the ugliest wheels I've ever seen. Like I say, there's a reason why all his wheels are one off...
 
I like my 15's because my car was built to have the "80's street punk" look. Plus, it looks more like a drag car and I can get some decent street slicks for it.

If I built a road car, though, I would go 17" max. No whacky spokes though.
 
Really big rims look stupid on any car, but so do the clothes some people wear, so let them roll on what they want. A bigger concern is when they mess with the suspension, usually a lowered car, and you see them rattling their teeth on the freeway and barely able to stay in their lane. Of course the high-rise "redneck Cadillacs" are no safer. Riding on the factory designed suspension is smart.

I don't see small tires going away. There are many small cars with 14" and under wheels. The problem is that most econo care use narrower tires than we like. I expect some hybrids will have suitable tires since they are pretty heavy and need a wide contact patch. Check tire sizes on new cars in parking lots or at dealers.
 
I went 17 inch..I'm 54 and I liked the looked of the wheel I chose...when I bought the car it had 17 inch TORQUE THRUST IIs on it..every street rod had them on..so they came off...now I'm runing ROCKET RACING FULIES..17x7 in front on 205 50 17 ,,and in the back 17x8 on 255 50 17...the car rides smooth and I dont feel the bumps with the low profile in the front...the ROCKETS look like the old westerns and cragar...but the spoke come to a point in the middle...I like them,.....just cant find a good drag radial in 17s....:banghead

AND I'M GOING FI with my stroker....

Damn I guess I am in the minority! 18's and fuel injection! And I love it! So how many choices of wheels do you really have if you are stuck on 15's? Cragars, Keystones, Ralleys, Steelies? All very boring to me. Wheels make the car. Period. You could have one sweet looking car, and have a set of played out cragars and I wouldn't give it a second glance.
 
I dislike THE LOOKS of almost anything bigger than 15" that I have seen on the older cars.... but then again, I like the old drag car look with the steam roller tires in the back, with lots of sidewall. It also depends on the type of driving you do. Driving down the freeway, taller sidewalls will give you a softer ride.... on my Willys wagon, I had 33" swampers on it and dropped the air down to 8psi when off road. It made a real soft ride BUT, don't try to get on the freeway like that, it did not corner too well (LOL). shorter sidewalls are much better for cornering.
 
I got 20" on my ram they handle good. But chipfoose suure knows how to f@#& up a car .dont like his way of thinking.
