Whatsup guys guys.

So whats the biggest tire you can run with stock 15inch dogdish rims with no tubs or spring relocating on a 1964 plymouth valiant ?

I've got 255/60/15 on my 66 valiant but its tight , sometimes a rub going over a bump , no riders on the rear seat etc. I would think a 235-245/60/15 with the right backspacing would be the ticket using a stock 8-3/4 small bolt rear , mine are 15x8 wheels w/ 4-1/2" backspacing

stock wheels would have been 13” not sure what 15s you have but with proper spacing 275-60R 15 will fit,and not rub.Getting the right spacing is key.with a stock wheel you may well be limited to a much smaller tire .

Thank you. Yea. Meant to say i was gona get 15inch big bolt rims

Ive read that if your doing disc brakes in the rear, it allows a more room vs the big bolt drum brakes ?

What rims, 15x7 or 15x8/8.5? How are,you going to change to bbp? 8 3/4?
I'm not a bit sure that rear discs save space compared to drums. But for sure, get your brakes settled before you order wheels. (Imo, 15x7s will fit better than the 8s, backspace will be more likely to be correct.)

I'm running 245/60-15's on my 66 Valiant. I can get a finger between both the springs and the fender lip.

Im doing an A body 8 3/4. With big bolt pattern axles. I want to run 245 60 15s. You recommend 15x7s ?

It all depends on backspace available on the rims you want, and what the axle/ brake swap does to the overall width of the rearend.
Sevens are the recommended minimum width for a 245/60x15. I think sevens are more likely to fit than an eight. In either case, I would plan on getting the most backspace available in your choice ofwheel.

+1 on getting your brakes squared away before ordering rims. there are so many different flavors of rear disc kit that it's impossible to give a single answer.

figure out your brakes and then measure to confirm how much room you have, then select your rims. getting rims with more backspace than you need-- say an inch-- will allow you to dial it in using a spacer if need be.

with the constraints of the early body narrow wheel wells, it's critical to verify and measure, especially when going for max width.

I couldn't agree more. 100%correct.

You're going to have to measure if you want to squeeze all the tire you can under that car. None of there cars measure the same due to production tolerances, or the lack thereof, so what will fit under one car, may not fit on the next.

Do you have pictures of your set up ?

Finally got it installed. Thoughts?

So, you've got what, about 6" to the springs from the WMS and about 5-1/8" from the WMS to the quarter lip? So let's just call it 11" of space to deal with since your tape measure isn't squared up. Section width on a 245/60/15 is 9.8", so you basically need to be smack in the middle, maybe a smidge closer to the springs.

Take your 6", subtract a 1/2" of clearance, you're at 5.5". A 7" rim is actually 8" outside to outside, so .9" from outside lip to the edge of the section width. So you're looking for a 15x7" with no less than 4.5" of backspace. That also give you 3.5" of front space, plus your .9" of tire, so 4.4", and you've got .6" to the quarter plus a bit.

Hopefully you measured the "tight" side or both sides are the same, if you did then a 245/60/15 on a 15x7" with 4.5" of backspace should be the ticket. Unfortunately, that's not a stock size, and a 15x7 with 4.25" of backspace will mean you'll be too tight to the quarters. It'll clear, but, it'll rub with any body roll- so, corners, speed bumps, somebody in the back seat or some extra junk in the trunk and it's gonna rub. Also, a 255 on that same 15x7 with 4.5" of backspace would probably work if everything is dead nuts accurate. The wider 10.2" section will probably end up being more like 10" on the 7" rim (255 is measured on a 7.5" wide rim), so you'd be right at a 1/2" clearance everywhere. Basically the minimum to the quarter if you don't want to rub, a little generous to the springs but not by much.

If you were running drums, a 15x7 with a 4.25" backspace would likely be the ticket. The disks add some width to the rear track, the rotors are thicker where they sit on the axle flanges than the drums are. It's usually just under a 1/4" per side that gets added with the rear disks.

Wow. Thank you for this. I really appreciate your answer. It helps me a ton!!

Do you know where i could find a 15x7 4.5 back spacing set of the 63 series wheel vintiques ?

I sure don't, pretty sure they don't make one. It's the size you need to maximize your tire width, but like I said a 15x7" with a 4.5" backspace is not a standard Mopar size. If you want something you can put a dog dish on in a 15x7" with a 4.5" backspace you're probably in custom wheel territory.

Sounds good !

Thank you so much for your help. I greatly appreciate it.

Good morning Brotha

Thank you again for that awesome message, by far has been the most detailed answer that has helped me so much.
I spent the morning calling custom wheel places and the 63 series in big bolt pattern 15x7 4.5 BS even with custom wheel guys is hard to find lol.

My other option was going to be a 235/60/15 on the 15 x 7 4" BS rims I have access too. Do you think that would work and also allow the car to sit at stock height with the wheel nice and snug into my wheel well ?

It's a shame Stockton Wheel is out. They could make anything you want.

The problem is a 15x7” with a 4” backspace also has a 4” front space. The 235/60/15” is 9.5” wide on the section, so you’ll have .75” of tire overhanging the rim. So you’re up to 4.75” out of your ~5” from WMS to quarter lip, or down to about 1/4” of clearance from the widest part of the tire to the quarter.

It won’t rub sitting still, but I’ve found that for most street driving situations you probably need more like a 1/2” to the quarter lip if you don’t want any rubbing at all. Less than that means you’ll probably get some occasional rubbing. But of course that depends on how you’re driving the car, where you’re driving the car, how often you put people or stuff in the backseat etc. For my car I want to be able to go to Costco and load my trunk full and then drive a mountain road home and not worry about my tires rubbing. But that’s a higher standard than someone that just putts down to the Dairy Queen once or twice a month when the weather is nice needs.

Stockton Wheel was always kind of “interesting” to deal with.

Wasn’t there just another thread about someone having a set of steel wheels modified? I’ll have to look.

I don't remember one....but then, I don't see everything on here. Wheel Vintiques has me wondering if they weren't getting their wheels from Stockton. Ever since Stockton's demise, Wheel Vintiques has been very adamant about not getting anymore 14" steelies in the small bolt pattern. I guess it could be a coincidence.
