Butters "Winter Upgrades". . Starting a Little Early

Pulling the column is no problem. 3 bolts and a set screw.. Bada Bing, bada boom. Thanks for the info

FYI, I finally got out to look at the shift tube and it necks down at the top so it will have to come out the bottom.

Project for @DionR :)

Find me a damn set of 2.73 gears for this damn Ford Explorer rear end lol. I can't find diddly aftermarket or Ford oem. Mustangs and Crown Vics ran them and it's my understanding that all 8.8s use the same ring and pinion. Talk about a damn rabbit hole!

Probably on your own on that one. :D

I assume you want new gears? I think I found used, but nothing new.

I think I've seen some 3.08s or something around there. Might have to settle for those. Not much difference, you will just do a 192mph burnout instead of 200mph.

Yea.. I'm really torn. I just don't want to ruin 1st gear

8 speed auto is gonna be major improvement. Looks like 2.73 gears for Ford 8.8 available new if you decide to go that route. Fox body guys swap those out and throw them in the trash.
Where did you see new?

Might look up @4.7Light, he put an 8HP in his car and, as I recall, is running a deeper gear.
I think he's running a much taller tire.. we'll see
Searching around now I am no longer able to find new 273 gears for an 8.8
Bummer
Have a 2.94 with my 8hp. 3.08 is fine.
Tire height?
I'm a little late to the party but if you are comparing gearing, this is far and away the best calculator I've found. Gearing Analyzer with Shift Tracer
I've using this one...

OK.. So I'm re-replying. This analyzer is badass! It wasn't until I sat down at a desktop , that I really got to play with it (giggity). I was trying it on my phone and it it was sloppy and touchy. The analyzer is way cool.. showing it actually shifting through the gears in real time and where the shifts land on the tach and speedo is the coolest thing ever. Not a huge difference in 1st gear shift..

edit.. added my current 3.27

Did you see the compare option? Let's you see how a different ratio looks.

Also.. What did you use for gears and tires. Interesting that the gear shift points changed between mine and yours

Edit.. I see them now

I just plugged in the numbers I had from my spreadsheet. The 8HP75 ratios were slightly different?

I noticed it said 8hp75 but they looked like hp70 numbers to me.. Does wiki match what you have?

Looks like my numbers are close but off a little. I probably truncated rather than rounded, or I got numbers from somewhere that did that.

I would use the 3 digit numbers from the wiki page if it was me. That's what I am going change my spreadsheet to use.

Here is what Dodge lists for ratios:

Hmm...I see that the ratio's change in the literature between 2015 and 2018. Both say 8HP70, too.

Here are the ratios Dodge published for the 2018.

Just looks like different rounding.. Close enough. I need to stop trusting the default entries but still, they're all pretty damn close. Comparing the 3.08 to 2.73, I'm actually liking the 3.08 a little better.. it's 4th gear that appeals to me the most. I' don't think I'll notice that it shifts a little earlier outta first, during normal drive or beating on it.. I beat on these thoughts to death, every time I'm looking at gears. Fork in the road.. I just need to pick one and 3.08s are available

Yeah, I wouldn't try it on mobile but on desktop it is by far the best one I've found. That's why I wanted to share even after you had done some calculations with others,.

Well that's freaking awesome. I didn't even know it did that:thankyou:

I just tried something and it REALLY helped me grasp the concept of normal driving with gears...

change your shift point to 2000 RPM and run it

I kind of like the 2.73 for the strip, should cross the line at the top of third and save a shift over the 3.08 gear. But the 3.08 would probably be better for autocross assuming it is held in 2nd gear. But I am just guessing on both.

Either way, I think it comes down to what is available. If the 2.73 isn't available then it is kind of a mute point.

Nice. What about with the 3.27 gear?

As I recall, the issue with the 8HP70 with a deeper gear in the Challengers was the motor redlined too fast for the trans and it hit the rev limiter in 1st. But that might have been with a 3.91 6M gear, too. I don't remember anyone talking like it was shifting too soon driving around normally.

I think the main problem with deeper gears is going to be traction. The stock 6.4 could already blow tires off a dart, with this new beast I think the higher gearing will help make it more controllable. Just spitballing here. I only have 3 speeds currently and I already know traction will be a huge issue on the autocross.
