Cam Suggestion for a 440-499 stroker

I got a customer at my shop and I've been upgrading his brakes and suspension but then we got to talking about his engine and how it was setup. I could tell it needed carburetor tuning and timing re-curved. I did that and it runs a lot better but I can't do much for it's driving manners. I finally got the cam specs from him and for a street cruiser it is overkill IMO. Like I said It's a stroked 440 to a 499, Edelbrock RPM heads, SRP pistons netting him 10.5:1 Intake is Edelbrock TM7, The cam is a Comp Cams Hydraulic Roller 23-713-9 with .549/.544 lift and 242/248 duration on a 110 LSA. He's got the 4.10 gears out back and what seems like a 1200 stall converter LOL. As you can imagine just putting in gear kills the idle by 350 rpm and there's not much low speed torque to be enjoyed. You need to wind up the motor to make some steam.

I'm suggesting a cam closer to lower 230 duration or high 220's and of course the Edelbrock Performer RPM intake to help him enjoy a healthy production of low speed torque for a very stout street cruiser ocassional street brawler setup he intended. What say you guys?
 
The Rpm intake would be a good choice.
If it is a 499, it should be more responsive than you're implying.
The cam is pretty tame already.
RPM intake and convertor change should fix it up.
 
You know I think I have a 727 stall converter laying in my shop. I’ll give it a shot to see how it responds and if the customer is happy with it. Good suggestions as always. Thanks

That cam might not be perfect but it should be okay with 4.10 gears. I have a 246/246 cam in the 512 in my Duster and it runs fine. I think the trick is the converter. I have a tight 10" converter in my Duster but the stall speed is still up in the 3500 range. The TM7 intake might not be doing him any favors. If there is room under the hood and in the budget then I'd switch it to a Trick Flow intake. I don't think I'd use a Performer RPM on a 499 inch engine but you could if he is just driving it around town. Try changing the converter first and see how that goes then maybe think about a different intake. A slightly smaller cam might also be in the cards but I wouldn't go much smaller, maybe just a few degrees.
 
I run a 246/250 on a 108 with .648 lift in a 408 running a 4 sp and it is mild enough. I would think that cam in a 500+ CI motor should be a pussy cat.
AND A TIRE SHREDDER !

You know I failed to mention he intends to go to a 3.55 in the near future, again he wants a cruiser. I recurved the distributor and set it at 34 degrees total and rejetted the carburetor and it turned into quite the tire smoker vs the lazy launches it did when it first came in.

Nope I posted this as I was closing shop. We will give it at shot tomorrow if our schedule permits. I’ll let you guys know how it goes. It’s a B-Body but I just posted here since I’m familiar with the community cause of my Demon.

That cam is smaller than mine , I dont have a problem w/ it !! His convertor should match the cam specs tho-------------
 
Have a proper converter built for the combo.

If it has the hood clearance, but an RPM intake on it.

You didn’t mention it, but hopefully it has headers on it.
If not...... then it’s the wrong cam.

For a strictly “cruiser” type build with a tight-ish converter and 3.54’s, the cam could stand to be a bit smaller.
 
Update:
I haven’t swapped in the stall converter yet but I did have a brand new Mopar wedge intake so I swapped it in end it instantly tamed the idle and tuned a lot easier, right now I’m just fixing his transmission kick down rod which is all in an odd shape And fixing his throttle linkage because it never actually saw wide-open throttle LOL. Curiously now the idle only drops around 220 RPM When engaged into gear versus 300+ with the single plane
 
It feels like a totally different car with the Mopar Wedge intake. Gobs of low end torque and extremely responsive. Lights up all three gears still using the low stall converter . Damn car caught me off guard when I did a straight launch! Glad we’re upgrading his suspension cause it definitely needs it now. It flat out will not go straight!
