This is in a rare 1935 Australian Ford Ute I bought. I'm planning on making it fully Mopar-driven. The diff was previously connected to a powerglide/283 though.
10-Bolt, Front-Drop carrier pumpkin with no access in back.
Driveline is at center of pumpkin.
Looks similar to 8 3/4, but has unusual numbers on it.
391 is stamped under the filler bolt.
5 is stamped on lower left.
Screwed on plates with 2 and 10 are on upper left.
Is it not 8 3/4?

Any help is much appreciated.

What are the markings left of the 391?

May be an early 8-1/4 chrysler, but it should have 11 studs instead of 10 like an 8-3/4 to be one of those.

Yup, looks similar but it's earlier... Same family butttt...

Have a look at 55-57 Chevy rears. Seeing how it was 283/powerglide powered it seems logical to me. And looks very similar.

The 8 3/4 rear came out in 1957, the early rearends had axles that were different than the units of the 1960's and 70's. My Dad's 57 Dodge Custom Royal Lancer has one. Most people don't fool with the early 8 3/4 rearends.

The early Mopar banjo rears would have had tapered axles- easy to I.D.
This is the rear out of a 1955 Ford. Looks like a match to me.

So an early ford 9 instead I guess.
I don't think so. Most of the "early" Ford 9's had "dimples" on each side of the pumpkin, while this one is smooth. Easiest way to tell if it's a 9" is to measure the spring perches, as they were a "standard" dimension, if memory serves, but it still doesn't look right to me, so.....

I did some digging here at work during my lunch, and I think what you is an 8-3/4" rear alright....but a Ford 8.75, not a Mopar.

Google "8.75 Ford rear" and you'll see what I mean.

And for your sake I hope I'm wrong, as I understand that finding parts for these can be a PITA.

I have a 54 Ford and a 49 Plymouth to compare. Unfortunately, they are both 250 miles away.
Either way, it's pre-57 Ford or Mopar, and not a "nine inch" Ford or a 8 3/4 Mopar. Either one will be a ***** finding parts.
To be honest, I would plan on replacing it. My candidate would be an 8.8 ford.

I checked out bazza"s reference in #21. Sure looks like a 49-56 Ford to me.
Which means neither a later 8" or 9" will bolt into the housing.
I still would replace it with an 8.8
Edit: WOW! was that a misstype! An 8 or 9 WILL NOT bolt into that housing!
2nd edit:I misread what I wrote, I was right the first time........ and an 8 or 9 still wont fit, lol.
