1966 Signet with a 1976 225. CARTER OR HOLLEY? I know that 1966 used Carter and 1976 used the Holley. 1bbl. Carter is installed now and needs to be replaced (leaking fuel around bowl) . Any advice concerning kick down and throttle linkage issues would be appreciated.
Note: car is new to me, history unknown.
Thanks

If I'm not mistaken, the later Holleys had different linkage than the early Carters. Rebuild the Carter and don't open a whole other can of worms.

I cannot stand the Holley. Just personal preference. I like the Carters much better. Always had good luck with them.

For a long time I hated Holley too- but man, changing the jets and tuning, once I got into them due to racing (see valiant in my pic)- I sure liked them for parts, availability and ease to tune. Honestly though, I have no idea about the smaller ones for our /6s.

If the carter 2bl I am putting on does not work out, I am going the weber, though it costs a bundle.

I like the Weber idea, but my hang up on those is I want a progressive 2 barrel. The 32/36 is the only one and it's really too small for a 225. It'd work well on a 170, but the 225 would be too much, especially one that's warmed up. It's a shame too, because if they offered say a 36/38 or a 38/40 that would be a game changer.

Ford Cortinas in Europe got a 36 DCD. 2 bbl progressive with removable choke tubes and no choke mechanism. Had fuel enrichment like some of the sidedrafts instead. You can still get them imported but they sure aren't cheap.
Formula Ford race cars run a 32/36 on a pinto engine and get 150-160hp without modifying chokes or throttles.
38 dgas isn't even a big improvement as the chokes are similar, 26/27 on the progressive carb and 27/27 on the 38 dgas. 38's also have way thicker throttle shafts than the 32/36.
Would have been nice if they made a bigger version of the 36 dcd though that is for sure.

There's a guy on the slant 6 facebook page that made a Thermoquad 2 barrel by cutting one in half. It's totally finished and looks great, but he sold the project car before he tried it out. He still has the carburetor though. Daniel Pierson is his name. Thermo Dual he calls it. Pretty cool.

I googled 36 DCD and found one with a mechanical choke.
WEBER 36/36 DCD PROGRESSIVE/TWO-STAGE CARBURETTOR (Manual Choke) - Classic Carbs UK
656 British pounds plus shipping sounds like a lot of dinero.
I'd consider F.I. at that price.

Try Redline/Racetep in Hollywood. They specialise in Webers.

If the cover isn't warped/damaged beyond repair/usefullness, best bet is to rebuild the BBS You've got.

The early Holley 1 BBL was 1920 and used by many manufacturers. I'll say they suck because I went thru 3 rebuilt ones over 18 years in my 1969 Dart 225 with the car stumbling at idle and dying leaving stop lights, before the 4th one fixed the issue and it purred like a kitten. No mechanic could fix it, claiming "vacuum leak" and such. Apparently, the sealed metering blocks get clogged and rebuilders don't touch that, nor test the rebuilt carburetors. The side-mounted fuel bowls can leak, as can the rubber accel pump diaphragm. Later Holley 1 BBL were 1945, and much different. No experience. I have a Carter BBS on my 1964 Valiant 225. The engine is so smooth and quiet at idle I could barely tell it was running with hood open with traffic passing. The silenced air cleaner probably helps. The BBS is simple, and same design as the common BBD 2 BBL, and I think the common after-market Edelbrock 4 BBL. You can adjust richness w/ screws on the metering rod, or swap rods (haven't fiddled). Download a full manual pdf free online, for the BBS or BBD. With a Holley, you have to change jets.

Check eBay. Someone on here was recently talking about a couple of brand new ones (not Chinese clones either, beware of those) that were listed on there.
You may be able to run a different 1 barrel carb than what came originally on a slant 6, for instance they ran Carter YF on Ford inline 6s and also on slant 6s in industrial application as well as export models. A Rochester monojet might be a possibility as well/should bolt up, BUT you may have to adapt your linkage and trans kickdown a bit. Might be a cheap consequence in doing so if it makes a difference between getting a good carburetor that will run the engine as it should run as the older these get, the harder stuff is gonna be to find.
If you're not in a hurry keep watching and what you want will appear.
I know like 2 weeks ago there was a guy on there that had a brand new (not rebuilt) Holley 1945 on there for a later 70d slant 6.
What you don't want would, be an 80s one with the computer control solenoid. (Not all of them were)
I have a really good 1945 on my truck, that won't be needed once I swap out the engine as I have a super 6 stack that I am gonna use.
But I can't let go of the 1 bbl til I do the swap because the truck needs to stay mobile under it's own power til that day comes. It'll be this spring some time.
I lucked into a guy on the .org site that had a bundle of NOS BBD carbs last summer, one of which went into my son's truck and the other is headed for mine. Sorry he don't have any more though. What you want and need IS out there, guaranteed. It might just not be there "today".
I hate to think how many good cores have gone to scrap since these engines quit being made.

Hmm, well, there is a guy with a Weber progressive for 435, for a jeep, but it would work on my 2 bbl. Pretty expensive, but I am thinking about it.
