Cinnamon 75 Duster \

-
From what I can tell, the passenger mirror was only offered in sport style on 1975 Dusters. I have an old sales brochure that does not show it as an option. Maybe dealers put them on? I've been looking for a USED one for the last couple years. While I want everything to look good, I did not want a new piece of chrome that would look like an add on ( especially since it is an add on).
I finally found this one on eBay last week. It's actually better than I thought. It looked like some of the chrome was missing as first glance. Turned out to be primer overspray and wiped right off with a little laquer thinner. It's got a few pits, light scratches etc... A perfect match for my other mirror and door handles. There is no glass in it, but that's OK too. I am trying to find a suitable convex replacement ( objects in mirror are closer...).
I'm just holding it on in the pic. Will mount it when I get to the body work and working on the inside of the door.

Its spring time, have you done any more work on the duster?

Between a family emergency, spring yard work and life in general, its been a bit busy around here....
Not sure it qualifies as 'work'. I washed it and drove it around the yard today. LOL
I also have some spare glass that i got out and cleaned up today. Looks like i have replacements for all side glass. The originals in the doors have heavy scratches and the quarter glass seals are not so good. Back is not bad, but i may change it. The spare i have is tinted.
Working out a game plan for what else i need to do and what needs to be done first vs when i can do things with considertion to time and budget. I will be getting on the body filler soon as well as doing the headliner and all the remaining glass.

Started repairing my headliner. I had noticed this, and may have commented previously... These are not cardboard like i keep reading. Its foam, sandwiched between paper. Were they ever cardboard? This pic is how i stripped the broken corners down to inner paper layer before building them back up.

I layered in high density flexible craft foam, then covered with paper bag. Used same spray adhesive as i did vinyl top with.

Then i sprayed the whole back with clear. It started to lift and bubble some of the new paper i put on. When the paint was near dry i was able to smooth the bubbles. Now i have a 'solid' board again. So next step will be to flip it and fix the inside.

Oh yeah, almost forgot...
Did a little area of filler behind driver door last weekend. Not done yet. Got it close, but was rushed a bit to get a quick coat of primer on it.. Will need a little more glaze and a lot more sanding.

The visible side had a serious water damage problem. This was compounded by a previous owner who used a few spots of heavy glue to re- attach a large part of one corner that had obviously peeled. If they had spread it evenly, it may have worked. However, there were a few spots attached with big gobs of glue. The rest was left to expand, contract, sag...the only way to get It back in shape again was cut it all out and glue in a new layer of paper. That whole side seam was bubbled also. that was ok, once i cut it open and glued it down. Did a few other small repairs around the edge and the board is ready to be covered.

Recovered the headliner today. Got this foam backed headliner fabric at Joann Fabric. Different surface/texture, but color is very close to original. thought it would hide more of the board surface issues. Far from perfect, but not bad and definitely way better than it was. Left some extra on the edges that i will probably wrap around. Not ready to install yet. Will probably replace the seal on back glass sometime in july. Once that is done I will start getting the interior back together.

Dag Nab It Keith, Somehow I missed this Thread. Awesome job you are doing there !!

Been back home from Carlisle about an hour now. Spent the whole day there. Hung out at Mitch's spot for a while. Got there just after the gate opened. Spent most of the day searching for parts. Got a better set of trim for my front glass, door and roof rail weatherstrips and a few other items of hardware, etc. dead tired and sunburned, loved it.

Glad you had a great day, I was there in Spirit...

Pulled the back glass today. Hardest part was getting inside and separating the inner rubber from the glass. Not really difficult... Just that it was 95 degrees outside and the inside of the car was an oven. Luckily i was only in there a few minutes. Most of the metal edge looked good. This corner needed some work...

So i drug out the welder and put a piece in it. Also closed up a few small holes on lower right corner. Primed and painted with rustoleum.

Headliner is in. Had a few trouble spots. Back corner on passenger side interfered with the back window gasket. And the gap was too wide. Not sure how since i copied the original damaged corners, but it was the worst distorted area. Anyway i did some trimming and pieced in the gap till it fit and covered. Overall im pretty happy with the appearance.

Also put the glass in back. The top inner gasket lip layed nice over the headliner when i test fitted it, but is very wavy now. Hoping i can get it to lay nicer when it is warm out one day this week. Used the rope seal around outside. Seated gasket on metal frame. Then realized i did not screw the new clips on, so got them in place before proceeding.
Set glass into bottom. Worked up sides and over top. Put the fill strip in. I will still add a thin bead of windo- weld under lip on glass. I used windex as a lube, so will let that dry out a while before sealing.

Well August got away from me with nothing else done on the car. My fathers health had not been good for some time and he had been in the hospital since late July. He passed away on August 6. I had been visiting often ( over 2 hours from home), then the funeral, and dealing with other things there since. Took my daughter back to college last week .
Got back at it with a little filler work today. Did the lower quarter on the drivers side. Hope to get some more done in the next couple days of this long weekend.

Keith I am so sorry that you lost your Dad. I'll be keeping you and your family in my prayers. God bless.

Sorry about your dad, I lost my mom when I was was 18.
She was only 42.
Good progress on the car, there is always next year.

Thanks for the thoughts guys. Lost Mom a long time ago. Dad was 86. I'm executor for the will, so lots to do yet. But for now, I am making time for the car...

As i said, I worked on the drivers side quarter yesterday. Front of the wheel was started previously. Worked on that for a while today. A few issues/ imperfections I want to work on yet, but that side is looking good. Did most of the other side quarter ( front and back of the wheel) today. Plan to continue with that tomorrow.
