Look at the cover and compare it to the chart in the other thread. 7 1/4 and 8 1/4 are shaped differently.

Now I'm confused, you said in the other thread you counted ten bolts, in order to do that you would need to see the shape of the housing and cover.

I googled that and got

i felt up in there i had to squeeze my hand in there and feel around i just went and double checked and there are 10 bolts and its pretty rounded no flat ends so im guessing its a 8 1/4 but does the gear ratio sound right

Well if you want to be absolutely sure just jack up the rear of the car so you can see it. Sounds like an 8 1/4 to me.

ok next question lol i know that the 2.45 gears are less desirable and i want something better so what would it take to put better gears in it and what would be a good ratio for a high performance 340

You'll need a different 8.25 housing (2.76 and higher have a different housing). You should be able to find one pretty easy if not the 8.75 is always a better option. That or go full out Dana 60.

I'm pretty sure the housing will work,, the carrier has different offset in the 2.71 and up..

Rusty covers that in one of those links..

I'll be finding out first hand in a coupla weeks.. got a 3:55 and sure-grip outta 80's pick-up, going into 74 8 1/4.. I hope.. lol

Lol.. ya know,, I was about to "paste" the answer to your question, from the link I posted,, but .... oh . . .

oops.. almost forgot..

hope it helps.. lol
