Hi,

Just wondering if anyone can reccomend some connecting rods and pistons for a 6.1 hemi. I have a new crate engine that will be stripped down, inspected for straightness and put back together. May chase some extra HP in future with NOS or forced induction so would like to go forged rods and pistons to be on safe side.
Thanks

Another option is Mahle drop in pistons and ARP rod bolts. The rods are pretty stout in stock form up to about 6-700hp.

Get ahold of Dave at Modern Muscle Performance Group. He worked with Mahle to create some forged pistons with thicker top ring land; balanced to factory stock specs; (Mahle makes the stock pistons also) so they drop right in. No re-balancing required. He also has some drop in pistons with forged, H-beam rods that are also drop in.

Dave is pretty innovative and has good manufacturer contacts/rapport to do this kind of thing.

Question for 72BBS Swinger,

It is my understanding that the connecting rods in the 6.1L Hemi are powdered metal and that rod caps are cracked. The benefits of this cracking is that it creates an irregular surface that helps to keep the cap from moving. The downside, is that you cannot resize the big end.

It was also my understanding that when you replaced the rod bolts you had to resize the big end.

So what gives, how can you install ARP rod bolts?

Also Modern Muscle,

Those pistons look really cool, are they only available in stock compression?

With the valve reliefs in the pistons it is actually a little lower then stock compression. Unfortunately if you want more then the weight will be out of spec and then the pistons are no longer a drop in.

Thanks for the info.

I like the idea of a forged piston. I think the hypereutectic are great for a stock car, there low thermal expansion has a lot of desirable characteristics in terms of longevity, but their inability to handle a lot of NOS makes them problematic for high performance applicaiton.
