okay so theres like a oil on my intake manifold like in little pools and and dont know were its comming from. Also when i took one of my plugs out first one pass. side there was like oil in the seat so my dad think that my oil rings might be bad or my valve cover gasket. the only way i can tell if the rings are bad is if i do a cylinder leakage test or compression test. Because if i do a compression test a DRY test and its low then i do it over with a WET test were i place some oil in the spark plug hole and if the compression goes up alot then the rings are bad........ but if you have any suggestions let me know thanks

I had a small block chevy years ago do the same thing with an aluminum intake right were the heat crossover is, a guy told me that it is the heat of the crossover that is drawing the oil thru the porousity of the aluminum. I don't know if it is true or not but it sure didn't do it with the cast iron intake. A leak down test will only tell you if your compression rings are bad not your oil rings. Oil rings are just that they control oil but cannot even new, seal against air pressure. If you are not using a bunch of oil I would say the rings are fine.

The oil is usually from the intake bolts, if you cant see it runnign along the valve cover. The plug oil could be from the cylinders (plugs would be wet looking, and threads all the way up would have a black oily coating) or fromt he valve covers. If you have weak rings, crankcase pressure will force oil out all over the place. The compression test will help.

When I first got my car I noticed that there was oil puddling up on the intake and couldn't see where it was coming from since along the valve covers looked dry. Then as I looked into it further I noticed that the oil seemed like it was coming from the intake bolts. I took one out and as I was pulling the bolt from the intake a large drop of oil dripped off the end of the bolt. I took out each bolt one at a time and reinstalled them with some red rtv sealant on the threads and the problem was gone.

Liquid teflon sealer works for me on intake bolts. Oil will travel (wick) up the threads through capillary action.

Yup..I like the teflon too. It washes off, instead of holding like RTV does.

never heard that about the bolts, and as for the intake sucking the oil through it ,that is all bs . i would jerk the valve covers off and put new gaskets on them. what kind of valve covers do you have?

Change Valve covers gaskets and use the teflon sealer on bolts and should be OK!!!!

Regular pipe-joint compound works fine on intake bolts too. The factory used Permatex #2. If you have a hydraulic cam, why not just use RTV and glue the covers down permanently?
