Dart 340 twin hood scoops

-
Anything that reduces the under hood temp is good.

You are generally right, but I sold several 71 Duster with the scoops
ordered from the factory when they were new.

Several Stock Eliminator Dusters still currently run them.

Twisters Yes

340's, no. Lots of them got scoops installed at the dealership level.

NHRA probably allows them on any 71-72 car because the twisters got the scoops. Are they correct, nope. I'd like to find a 71-72 340 Duster with an original fender tag or broadcast sheet that has J54 on it. Never seen one. Seen plenty of repro's that have the number, no originals.

Have a good holiday.

The later twin snorkel common scoop is more effective. But really only because 1% gain is better than zero percent gain.

As mentioned, air touching the hood is basically stationary, and the further you get from the hood surface, the 'faster' air is moving (in other words, vehicle speed).

Cold fresh air is better, but with no ducting to the air cleaner and no speed, the twin scoops are, as mentioned, heat release. I wouldn't be surprised if air flows OUT of them at freeway speed.

A little gorilla tape and yarn might put some proof in that pudding. Your assertion is hard to believe but could very well be true.

When I think about the ten square feet of grill (and underhood , via radiator) getting highway speed air at full blast, compared to a third of a square foot of scoop opening that's tucked up next to a wall, it's not unreasonable.

Especially since the scoops didn't lead to an air box or anything.

There is very little RAM air effect below 100mph. The intake air into the carb is traveling too fast and to have any kind of RAM effect it must exceed this. This is obvious in aircraft where thy only put a scoop on turbines if they are capable of speeds higher than this. Check out crop dusters with no scoops. There are a ton of factors that go into when and how a air scoop will be able to provide any effect at higher speeds. Most street cars will never see a speed or have scoop design that will matter.
What scoops do provide is cool air, and this can make a big, big difference, but it won't likely be apparent on a Dyno.
They do look cool, especially from the drivers view. I had them on my Demon years ago. But since they never came stock on a 340 Duster ( they did come on Twisters, but there was no 340 Twister) I have resisted the urge to install them.

Here is some good information on air scoops, which if really designed carefully can reduce the vacuum in an air scoop and have a CASS of 50 mph or so.

C'mon...I've posted this before. The twin scoops are there because they're COOL. Forget anything else, they're just cool!!

Actually, on my 71 Demon 340, they're also good at letting heat out when the car is shut off.

This and totally this!! I couldnt give a fat rats *** if they do zero for my performance, they look awesome and not everything we do to our cars has to be to make them go faster. I dont drive fast enough for the wing on my car to do make any difference either, but man, it sure looks awesome
LMFAO I was thinking the same thing!!
