I have a 74 dart that's sat for about 6 months. I tossed in a new battery flipped on the fuel pump, turned the key and nothing. Noticed that they dash lights go dim but the head lights and voltage at the battery stay at 12 volts with 0 change when they key is turned. Any ideas??

Stick or auto?

IF stick does it have the clutch interlock?

If auto, have you tried wiggling the shifter

Seat belt interlock? (Reset button on relay under the hood?)

there may also be another relay up under the dash near the glove box on a 74 you could check

It has an auto trans. Did move to neutral and back to park with no change. Seat belt safety has be disconnected for about 15 yrs. will check ballast then try jumping the starter.

Thanks for everyone's input.

bump the starter relay if crank put in nuetraral pummp turn key to start hit relay again if not workin in nuteral check that nutural safty plug in just unplug may need a new relay when done lol down side

OK, get your test light and meter and do some shooting

Your starter relay should look something like this:

Start with the two push on connectors, the two on top in the photo. Have a helper twist the key to "start" on your command, or else rig clip leads so you can prop the meter up to see.

Hook the meter first to one, then the other push on terminal. Do NOT disconnect the wires, "backprobe" the connector. ONE of the connectors should be "hot" in "start."

If both connectors show hot, this means the neutral safety switch is not going to ground in park/ neutral, or else the wiring is broken/ poor connection, or hanging disconnected at the transmission

Disconnect ONE wire. Probe the wires and find out which one is hot in start. Hook that wire back to the relay. Does NOT matter which push--on terminal it hooks to. Ground the remaining push--on terminal with a clip lead, and try the key in "start" again. It should crank. Be careful, it will crank in any gear.

IF so, you have a wiring/ neutral safety switch problem

If NEITHER wire shows hot in "start," you are not getting power from the key, through the bulkhead, past the seatbelt interlock and to the start relay.

READ this thread:

Is that relay under the hood? How did you bypass the interlock? Check the yellow wires at the relay, with the key in "start" and see if either goes "hot." If so the problem is right there at that relay. Pull the two yellow/ yellow/ tracer wires and hook them together.

If NEITHER yellow at the relay are hot, move back to the bulkhead connector, if you don't have it there, get under the column, remove the trim piece, and access the ignition switch connector. You can back--probe the connector, and check for starter power there.

if it is the relay pictured, take it apart and you can clean the contacts. sometimes they get a carbon buildup. might save you a few bucks. good luck

Yes, it's running. I pulled it through the gears about 10 times and it fired up. So still an issue there but atleast I know for sure where it is
