I have a 74 Dart. I knew the ignition was messed up when I bought it, but thought I could fix it for $12.00..........I would have to start the car with a hand held push button starter, which sucks!

I installed a new ignition, and the car will still not start. I did notice that if I held the key in the start position, after about 4 seconds it will start?
I have never seen this problem before, can anyone help me with this?

Thank you all!

So your saying the car now starts and runs...it just takes about four sec to get started? How about a fuel problem?

No....this is hard to explain. When you turn your ignition to start the car, the motor turns over as it makes contact. I need to hold the key all the way, and hold it for about 4 sec, then then the motor starts to turn over and starts. You must turn and hold key all the way for 4 sec before motor evens makes a sound.

I hope you can understand?

Thanx!

yikes thats pretty interesting. i'd start going through checking connections at the firewall, your ground circuit, battery + to the starter, fully charged battery?, etc

I would look into a starter relay and check the crank signal going to the relay. Make sure that you are getting the signal to the relay as soon as you hit the key. If the relay is not grounded properly it can cause a delay as it will try to search for a ground. Try this for testing purposes. Take the G terminal on the relay and take it straight to ground. This will by pass the neutral saftey switch. So be cautious that the car is not in gear. See if that makes any difference. I had this problem ( well similar problem) once before and it was the relay causing the issue.
