does anyone use 100LL av gas ?

I was wondering if anybody uses 100LL av gas and what there experiences were/are ?
 
I have and have never had an issue with it. If your trying to run it in a car with cats though......no bueno.

I usually mix it 70/30 with 93 octane and have had great experiences.

Only problem is that if your out on a long trip, you have to plan ahead and either know where to buy more, or bring some with you.


Since I like to go on long cruises, I have been using Race-Gas for the last 3 years, and it works awesome. Never have any detonation problems and it mixes to whatever octane rating you desire, within their range.

It's about the same price as mixing Av Gas. I mix one 32 ounce can with 8-9 gallons of 93 pump gas and get 101 octane. It even smells just like racing fuel.

I'm going to school to be a aviation maintenance tech. The teacher always said that you can't run 100LL in cars, and has backed it up with stories about people around here blowing up engines "back in the day". I'm assuming he meant pure 100LL AV gas though and not mixed.

That's awesome finally there's an additive that actually works, I'll have to check that stuff out for sure. It'd be nice to just mix some of that in my tank when I want to crank up my timing at the race track.
 
Have you bought an airplane?
 
AVLL when mixed, will not harm your older engine, however it is bad on catalytic converters and O2 sensors. IE newer engines.
The only issue would be lead build up which should be monitored. Not sure about running it without mixing it, so no comment on that.

AVLL is a viable option (FOR OLDER ENGINES) if you can't get race gas in your area or you don't want to buy the Race-gas mix.

I have logged thousands of miles using both and have no issues to report. Clean valves and no leaks.
 
Race gas is 12 bucks a gallon and av gas is $5 a gallon pretty easy math. It's all I've ever ran with the new motor just pure av gas no bad smell or anything. It's very clean and if you get it on your hands when it dries very quickly and leaves no smell. I love it in the lawn mower and not to say it makes the stupid lawn mower run any better but I certainly don't walk around my yard in a cloud of fumes.
 
You have to have a "friend", don't you?
It's supposed to be fairly tightly controlled, no?
 
Go to any small airport in your area vs. commercial airport.

I would give Race-gas a try though. It's legal and it's formulated for exactly what we are using it for.

I don't get paid by them so this is not a paid endorsement.
 
AV gas has additives in it that can be bad for your car. There are stabilizers and such in it that allows it to perform at altitude. Read up on it. We've argued this point before and I was totally lambasted, but it's true. You don't need to run AV gas in your car.
 
One thing comes to mind, and this is based on my experience as an aircraft mechanic. Av gas burns slower, little hotter and aircraft motors all run a dual ignition system. I do know of a few people that run straight av gas and don't mix with unleaded, however they did have to run different heat range of plugs and change their ignition curve a little bit. It is definitely cheaper than race gas. And as a few members already said, mixed with premium and they have had good results.
 
I know we discuss this a little over a year ago and boy it took off LOL again I've been bored lately so... but on the other hand I do now have well over a year-and-a-half experience with running it solely in my brand new motor. The motor has never seen anything else but. When I took the heads off this last winter everything was A-OK. I do think I can run a little more timing with it and not have as much problem as again the octane level and the way it runs so cool. Nothing like spilling a little bit of it and not having the garage reek like old gas fumes. Altitude additives LOL are you high or something?

Ran straight 100LL in my cars all the time. Never an issue.

Don't be fooled by the Low Lead label. It's got a lot in it. Blowing up cars using 100LL, that's funny.

This statement is partially true and I was involved in that debate. I stand by my recommendation to use Race-gas additive if real race gas is not available. However, AV gas mix will work on older engines just fine.

The only issue is with the lead in the fuel and how it will act on your valve train, and rubber gaskets.
 
Used to run 1/4 avgas to regular unleaded in the 440 cross ram 67 Charger I had. No problems what so ever and ran the best with it. 100 LL still has 5 times the amount of lead that regular leaded fuel used to have, so it will accumulate on plugs. Stay's fresh much longer and if there is a fuel leak the blue dye helps in tracing it

Do you get blue dye accumulation around the bowl vents? Now I really wanna use it!
 
Several of us racers back in the 90s used to run it. Never had any problems, can not buy it now since the County took over the smaller air ports around Vegas. Couple of my nhra stocker friends still use it in the stockers went they bracket race, one guy get it out in Overton, he has an aircraft tail number from a friend that allows him to buy it...the AV gas runs just as fast as the expensive racing gas they use a the nhra national events...
 
Long time ago when starting out in aviation, worked on the aircraft fueling station. First thing in the morning need to sump the tanks and tanker of 100ll and Jet fuel.. Could not put what was drained back into the fuel farm, so usually went into the tug. If any left over usually went into the car. Jet fuel went into some ones diesel truck. Make a friend at the local airport, take him for a ride ect., one good turn deserves another........
 
Jpar how much compression are you running and what is your cranking cylinder pressure?
