does anyone use 100LL av gas ?

-
I'm going to school to be a aviation maintenance tech. The teacher always said that you can't run 100LL in cars, and has backed it up with stories about people around here blowing up engines "back in the day". I'm assuming he meant pure 100LL AV gas though and not mixed.

I used to run 115/145 quite a bit, it didn`t bother my new 68 383 fastbqack at all.
He`s probly telling you that so u wont make off with some of it, or he wants it for himself.
If drained from a plane it is not supposed to be put back in a plane either !

I have two friends who run NHRA stockers....they also bracket race their cars. At the NHRA races they have fuel check and have to use a spec gas but at the bracket races they use 100LL from one of the outlining airports....They say it car runs the same...and those engines are not cheap.

You guys brought this thread back from the dead! Never tried to run it in my car, and I work on jets now so I no longer have the easy opportunity to grab some

I've had a 413, and a 451 with 13.5 to 1 C ratio. Both ran great on 100 LL. The 451 would run fine on a 50/50 mix of 91 and 100, .037 quench, mixture on the rich side, 38 degrees timing, 509 cam with a late closing intake valve event. Also keeping it COOL helps. All these factors added together allowed me to run the high compression 451 on the street or track with no problems. And that motor was a screamer! 100 LL WORKS GREAT! Even when mixed with 91 premium. Oh yea, the thin air in Colo helps too.

I've used it now for several years and always enjoyed it's characteristics all the way around and up and down the board. Including the price, comparatively speaking.
I have calmed the cam down a little bit and left overlap to bleed compression so I don't really need the high-octane anymore but I sure do like the clean fuel. Now I just mix a little in for the smell LOL...

Yes, I've even tried it in my Dart, with a Low Compression RV 440. Runs fine! And the garage smells good now, too.

AV gas has additives in it that can be bad for your car. There are stabilizers and such in it that allows it to perform at altitude. Read up on it. We've argued this point before and I was totally lambasted, but it's true. You don't need to run AV gas in your car.

My tech teacher 30 years ago was a retired USAF airplane tech, and a circle track racer (successful in the northeast). He was adamant that we not play with av-gas. Either build an engine right to not need it, or buy the right race fuel for engines that operate at low altitudes. I never had run it. When I needed to I ran various VP products and I'd run them long before avgas.

I run 100ll in my 418 50 50 with 91 engine runs smoother and I love the smell also my cranking compression is 195 psi.

I literally use it in everything. It's great in my lawn and garden equipment as I never have to worry about carburetors going bad from the effects of ethanol.

Yes, and when you consider that gas is now around $2 a gallon, av gas is 4, you have an average cost of $3 a gallon, mixed 50/50. Not a bad price to operate a hi performance motor! Or a lawn mower. LOL

Wow, this hurt. $3.30 a gallon in so cal. I try not to look at prices. What can I do? If gas sales dropped I dont think prices would drop. Might even go up. Cause the governments, state and fed, need the money. Must meet their projections for income from gas sales. Cause they have spent that money allready. Starting to ramble.... .stop now! Thanks a lot! LOL. right.

Yes, I noticed that the prices were really high out there. I have seen regular as low as $1.76 around here lately. Murphy's Express and others. I was shocked!

100LL works fine in car engines. Used it for years in all sorts of engines. Not a single issue regardless of what naysayer speak of. So much BS surrounding the stuff. You'd think it was akin to putting a stick of dynamite inside a block.

Total horsecrap.

All this talk of moth balls................how long before someone tries dropping moth dicks in their fuel tank ?

Quoted for the truth!

So many ignorant people regurgitating myths and wives tale about 100LL, you'd think the world would end if so much as a drop was burned in a lawn mower. I love the horse **** about how it only works at high altitude. Someone better tell the crop duster pilots that. Maybe the people that live in high altitude places like Denver can get by on it.

It works great in Denver, in a 13 to 1 C Ratio Big Block RR. Street driven regularly. Also works great in my 7.5 to 1 Big Block Dart. But the RR is waaaay faster.

^^^^^^^^^^--------------------------------------nuff said !!

Some of my dirt track buddies use it and so do a bundle of guys with Harley's...

How about adding some 33% Nitromethane R/C 2-stroke model engine fuel? Just need to richen up the jets a few sizes lol

When I raced in certain classes many years ago, we had fuel checks. One problem with the checks was pump gas was screwing up the tests. Guys that bought race gas were OK and pump gas was failing. Once I knew that the fuel checks were being done buy not enforced, we dashed our fuel with a little nitromethane. Ahhh good times when you can't get caught.

Just rereading this od thread.
GO AHEAD AND USE THE JP4 !! LOL

Having been an aircraft mechanic for 30 years I have run 100LL many times, in everything from my old red ram hemi to my current street driven 440. I usually cut it with some pump gas. It is an excellent gasoline. The only issue I could see with it is the lead fouling plugs, which I have never experienced, or wreaking havoc with a catalytic converter, which my cars dont have. Being in the industry and having connections to get tank drainings for free is a bonus. Anyone who says you cant run it in a car or at low altitude doesn't know what they are talking about. It is gasoline, and much better than the crap we currently buy out of the pump.

One other thing that makes me chuckle is when you hear on the news about a jet that crashed, and the dangers of the "highly volatile jet fuel" for crying out loud, it is kerosene and is much less volatile than gasoline. I used to run jet fuel drainings in my old Volvo diesel, again cut with a little regular diesel as it is more oily and the injector pump needs some lube. The car loved it and ran cleaner than on straight diesel.

This is my favorite part of the naysayers argument. Last I checked airplanes do not take off and land at "altitude". What is the MOST dangerous time frame for any aircraft flight 99.9% of the time? Take off and landings. Climbing to altitude, power up for a go around/aborted landing, etc. Those are at low altitude for the most part. So lets run a fuel that is suspect at lower altitudes. Poppycock!!!
